Every girl in DD's reception class has a name ending in "a"

Every single one of them. 14 girls from all over the world, and none have names ending in any other sound / letter.

I knew these girls names were popular, I had no idea quite how much!

That's quite something Confused

I've just realised that not ONE of the women I work with has a name ending in 'a'.

Actually now I think of it, I do work with a Nicola, but she is ALWAYS known as Nicki, even on her email.

Is it generational I wonder then?

KoalaDownUnder · 22/10/2014 05:57

I think it is definitely a bit of 'thing' in the past few years. The ones I see repeating amongst friends/family/nursery lists/baby name sites:

Ava
Ada
Ella
Milla
Mila
Mara
Mira
Lilla
Nova
Nola
Nora
Lola
Freya
Frida

etc.

Then there are the longer, frillier ones: Isabella, Arabella, etc.

It's not a criticism, they're pretty names...it just seems to be a definite trend.

My 2 sisters and I (in our 30s) have names ending in -a, our surname ended in -y.

My surname now ends -er so my girls have -y or -ie names

squoosh · 22/10/2014 14:50

'A' must be the most common letter for girls names to end with. I don't think it's necessarily a trendy or current thing.

Fiona
Linda
Nicola
Amanda
Gemma
Melissa
Laura

All common names but none of them currently popular.

Florrieboo · 24/10/2014 04:01

My name and lots of my friends names end in A, but, none of my children or my husband have A ending names.

TheHorseHasBolted · 30/10/2014 22:17

I'm not all that surprised, especially if there are other nationalities in the mix. There are countries where almost all girls' names end in A. (I only know of one Polish one that doesn't, for example.)

The class of children has much more of a mix but probably slightly more -i or -ie endings than anything else.

In my age group none of the most popular names ended in A - I think Jane, Claire and Louise were the front-runners. Sarah was quite popular, so at least an A sound, but usually spelt with the H as well.

LynetteScavo · 30/10/2014 22:22

All of DDs names end with an a.

For some reason I really wanted her to have a name beginning and ending with an a. Confused

JohnFarleysRuskin · 31/10/2014 09:46

Me, my 50 yr old Dsis, two DNs, and DD all end in 'a'. We didn't realise until very recently!

KatherinaMinola · 31/10/2014 10:07

I've noticed this too. It's a definite trend. When I was little, consonant-ending (or consonant-sound-ending) names were much, much more popular:

Lynn
Karen
Sharon
Jane
Susan
Joanne
Christine
Helen
Rachel
Carol
Dawn
Michelle
Jacqueline
Diane

...etc

Incidentally, girls' hairstyles were much more often pixie-cuts or pageboy bobs too, and there was much less pink around. The trend now is frillier overall.

I once read somewhere that a girl having a consonant-ending name is a positive advantage in life, but I have no idea whether this was a made-up stat.

longestlurkerever · 31/10/2014 13:03

I do like "a" endings. They're feminine without being as cutesy as some of the "ee" sound endings. A vowel sound is nice to break up the first name from the surname too (unless the surname begins with a vowel). DD has 2 ("a") names (Anna Sophia). I am Helen and sometimes wish I was Helena as my name would flow better I think. Considering something else for dc2 though.

outtolunchagain · 31/10/2014 13:11

Never thought about this but have just gone through all the women who work in my office , about 20 mostly 30+ in age and only two , of which which is me , have names ending in A.Most popular is Karen , followed by Gill/ Gillian and Rachel

Showy · 31/10/2014 13:13

In DD's class 3 end with an a sound, 3 with an ee, one eye, one ace, one ine, one ish, one ance. Every single boy is called Jacob or Harry though.

lecherrs · 31/10/2014 13:15

Yes, in my DDs class almost all the girls names end in either the a sound or the ee sound.

In fact, in DD1s class of 20 girls only 4 do not have the ee/a ending.

I can't find the register list for DD2, but from memory it is very similar.

Personally, I'm not keen on either and neither of my DDs names end in these sounds. I prefer the a ending to the ee ending, as I think a lot of the --ee names sound quite little girly and are often a bit twee. I also think it will date names terribly in the future.

But each to their own, I suppose.

OublietteBravo · 31/10/2014 13:32

Only 2 of the girls in DD's class have names ending in 'a' (Nadia and Karishma). Out of my work colleagues, 4 have names ending in 'a' (Sandra, Barbara, Nicola and Anya). When I was at school quite a few names ending in 'a' were popular - In my class there were girls called Emma, Nicola, Fiona, Anouska, Rebecca, Jessica, Anita, and Joanna (and Sarah - which ends with the same sound).

PsammeadPaintedTheLion · 31/10/2014 13:47

On the one hand we have
Mia
Sophia
Sophia
Lara
Nara
Lucia
Katharina

On the other we have
Amelie
Isabelle

Both of whom are new. So maybe the trend is abating. This time last year we had another 4 all ending in -a but they are at school now!

spamanderson · 31/10/2014 23:46

Both my dd's names end in 'a' as does my full first name. My girls names aren't common ones, certainly no more of their names in their school :)

BrieAndChilli · 01/11/2014 09:04

Dd is 6 and the only girl in her class to have an --a ending name and her name is not popular (can never find anything in those name shops with her name on ad her name is never on the top name lists etc)

daniellalou22 · 02/11/2014 14:41

Quite common really, as a teacher, my form group has 12 girls in it; 4 end in 'a' 6 end in 'ee' and 2 end in non vowel sounds

TheGirlAtTheRockShow · 02/11/2014 17:59

Our surname ends in an a sound, so we had to avoid names ending in a for DD. Her name ends with an n.
Loads of girl names end in a or e I find.

tallulah · 02/11/2014 18:05

DD currently in Y3. Her YR class was 21 girls and all but 4 ended in a, with no duplicates Grin

KenDoddsDadsDog · 02/11/2014 21:03

What are the names OP?
6 girls in DDs class and all have ie or y names apart from her. She has an A , which Is forrin due to DH.
