Are some old fashioned names ready for a comeback?

With the increasing number of obscure baby names that many celebrity parents are giving their children, are the really old fashioned names ready for a comeback?

Old fashioned names like Ezra or Ethel are rarely now heard in the playground or at nursery, so I am really interested to know if anyone has decided to go down the traditional route and why?

The really old fashioned names have been back for a while. You can't move for little Florences and little Wilfreds.

Lily Allen has an Ethel so I think it's safe to say that's quite a trendy name in certain circles.

I think we need to bring back Roger as a popular name!

Sophronia · 17/10/2014 18:05

Old fashioned granny-type names are already back.

I think Enid, Ethel, Mabel and Hilda are all horrible and should be left back in the 1930s but people seem determined to use old lady names even if they're ugly.

They've been back a while - look at the girls in "Despicable Me" : Margo, Edith and Agnes (that was released in 2010 so made 2009).

Is this a joke? Hmm

It will be names like Beverly, Shirley, Sharon that make a comeback next.

Wait until today's teens are having children!

"Are really old fashioned names ready for a comeback?"
Hmm

Has the OP looked at the pegs at the nursery recently? :)

Grandparent names - think Edwardian/1930s vintage - are already back in a big way. I'm a teacher, and there are loads of little Arthurs, Alfreds, Sidneys, Ernests etc coming through. Girl equivalents are Mabel, Ivy, Edith - pretty much any character from Downton Abbey!

I reckon the next big revival will be 'Enid Blyton names' - things like Peter, Robin, Ralph, Philip/Pip and Laurence for boys and Sally, Anne, Mary, Judith, Susan and Nancy for girls. Sort of mid-century and friendly/down to earth sounding.

bealos · 18/10/2014 14:03

agree with @tempsperdu - Susan, Sally, etc are all due a revival.

I waiting on Nigel, Trevor and Geoff to make a comeback. :)

Though Nancy I'd pop into the Victorian names revival, we have lots of those already round here.

I know a family with six kids (18 and under) and they have a Simon, Susan, Emma and Michael which seem quite radical for the 21st century.

Nanna names and scullery maid names had been the "big-thing" for the last 5? 7? years? Where have you been Daisy!??

I'm actually really hoping this trend will end soon, as depute their trendiness, I still find most of them rather ugly or silly.

I'd love to know what the next-big-thing will be, though!?

ViviPru · 20/10/2014 08:18

I agree, odd thread. I've actually ruled out Ezra even though I really like it because it's too of the moment and trendy currently. Confused

Squirm · 20/10/2014 14:10

Ezra and Ethel are very now. Where have you been hiding??
