Wilma is frumpy. Martha, Betsy, Mary, Mary Anne?

Velocirapture · 14/10/2014 21:22

Mary. Lovely, timeless. Can be a high court judge or a rock star.

bringbackfonzi · 14/10/2014 21:59

Mary. Very sweet, also sophisticated for a grown-up.

Sophronia · 14/10/2014 22:33

Mary. I like Willa or Wilhelmina / Willemina though, as an alternative to Wilma.

mathanxiety · 15/10/2014 01:15

I love Wilhelmina too, and Willa and Willow both have a lot going for them. Bit Wilma is in the same league as Gladys and Mavis imo.

Of Wilma and Mary, Mary wins hands down. Come to think of it, Mary would win over a lot of other names if I were doing the choosing.

Surfsup1 · 15/10/2014 04:49

Willa.

Mary is beautiful. I quite like Wilma too Grin

Delia? if you can get away from thoughts of Ms Smith, it's lovely I think.

TotleighTowers · 15/10/2014 07:04

Mary. I don't think there are enough Marys around - I only know two under the age of fifty but it is pretty and classic, not dated or an old lady name at all. She could also use Molly and Polly as nicknames if she wanted (think they're originally both nns for Mary as well as Margaret).

Wilma could be cute if you could get away from the Flintstones reference. It is one of those names that will probably become cool at some point once a few more people give it to their DDs. I wouldn't be brave enough to be a pioneer though.

Willow is lovely but I do think it sounds like the child is named after the character on Buffy (not that there is anything wrong with that...we have Cordelia and (Ale)Xander on our longlist...)

My dd (12 weeks) is a Willa, and her official name is Wilhelmina. I also love Wilma. We went for the full Wilhelmina so she'd have more name options when older. Mary is also a great name, a classic and so pretty on a little girl. I think between the two it depends how brave you are feeling, as Mary, while still vintage, is obviously more conventional.

You're gonna hate me for this, but they're both names used around where I live to describe a woman's parts Blush

Where do you live?

God the poor child.

Some traditional names are cool or sweet. They are just old-fashioned.

Surfsup1 · 15/10/2014 08:46

Theoretically Mary should fit neatly with the trend of vintage names, but somehow it just doesn't. To me Mary is either contrary, has a little lamb or is covering up an illegitimate pregnancy by blaming it on god.

squoosh · 15/10/2014 10:29

Wilma would be an affliction rather than a name.

Mary is quite nice if I try (very, very, very) hard to put the Holy Mary stuff out of my mine. Would work well in England, less of those pesky Catholic overtones.

BlueberryWafer · 15/10/2014 12:26

I live in the Lake District

DecaffTastesWeird · 15/10/2014 16:59

Mary - really don't like Wilma (sorry)!

ilovehotsauce · 15/10/2014 17:03

I love Wilma Grin

Alisvolatpropiis · 15/10/2014 17:48

Mary.

Wilma is not great.

squoosh · 15/10/2014 17:50

I would be that idiot who would be unable to say 'Wilma', and would have to say 'WIIIILLLMMAAAAAAAAAAAA' instead.

DramaAlpaca · 15/10/2014 22:22

Mary.

By a very, very long way.

BonaDea · 15/10/2014 22:25

Mary Mary Mary.

Mary.
