Beatrix, too fat and battle-axeish?

Hello. DD2 is due in less than a month and we're not getting very far with names. DH is very keen on Beatrix, and it's almost right - classic, not overly popular but not too weird either. Unfortunately, it makes me think of a big fat battle-axe of a woman (sorry, is that mean?) or a Vegas stripper (Trixie). Do I just need to get over my prejudices or can any of you suggest something else? I like the sound of Philippa but it's altogether too horsey and posh, no? And I really like Vivienne, but DH is totally opposed...... Our two year old thinks Mr Tumble would be a good name for the baby. At this rate, we'll be going with that!

'Beatrice'? Slightly softer.

I think Beatrix is a great name - possibly because I think big fat battle-axe women are fabulous and the world needs far more of them.

Um...no. Just no.
But if this is what you see, don't choose it. How about Beatrice instead, or go 80's with Belinda.

moxon · 14/10/2014 10:05

Should clarify: my No was responding to question. I happen to quite love the name. :)

No, you don't need to get over your prejudices if you don't like the name. Vivienne is lovely, shame it's off the table.

What about the following, they have a similar vibe (I think) to the names you've mentioned.

Felicity
Verity
Constance
Imogen
Alexandra

I love Beatrix. Lovely name and I like Trixy as a nn. Makes me think of Queen/Prinses Beatrix of the Netherlands.

DoeADeer · 14/10/2014 10:38

Yes, I'm quite sad about Vivienne. I think it would be a great, strong name for a baby that his delivered some mighty kicks these last few months. Felicity's rather nice. And have suggested Alexandra to DH, but I just got a noncommittal 'mmm'.....

I much prefer Beatrice - I think it's lovely.

tomatoplantproject · 14/10/2014 10:41

Beatrice. But then I am biased with my very own. But Beatrix is also lovely and makes me think tall, willowy and artistic (which is my image of Beatrix Potter).

Noctambulist · 14/10/2014 10:45

Embrace that Bloomsbury vibe:

Virginia
Gertrude
Anastasia
Violet
Vita
Dora
Cora
Vanessa
Angelica
Ottoline
Lydia
Sylvia

I wish Beatrix made me think tall, willowy and artistic.... I can't get past this. Blush

I love it!

And the lady in the picture looks pleasant!

squoosh · 14/10/2014 11:26

Beatrix, a lovely young lady with a certain reputation. Is 'sponsored' by a married gentleman and set up in lodgings in St John's Wood.

Ha ha ha! Love the feisty Beatrix in bloomers picture....

squoosh made me giggle. Ottoline is a good suggestion then.

chrome100 · 14/10/2014 15:06

I knew a Beatrix at school. She was a massive bitch. So it's a no from me.

mathanxiety · 14/10/2014 22:36

I think Vivienne is a sort of filler middle name and not at all a strong first name.

I really like Beatrix for all the reasons your DH likes it. It's Beatrice (which I also love) but with a bit of Germanic sass to it. Or maybe I'm thinking of Asterix the Gaul and that should be Gaulish sass. Not Roman anyway.

Philippa is definitely horsey imo. Not just because that is basically what it means. Fenella is another one that sounds horsey to me.
