Rafferty?

Please help - we cannot decide on a boy's name and I'm due any day now (don't know if it's going to be a boy or girl yet). Also can't decide on surname so I'm feeling a bit lost atm.

I heard Rafferty the other day and I'm after some opinions. I have seen previous threads about the name and opinions really changed in a couple of years - so I would be interested to see what you all think in 2014.

My other faves are Jacob (Jake), Joshua (Josh) and Samuel (Sam) but DP has vetoed them all boo! I really like names that are longer, with a good, obvious nn like these (so Rafferty would be maybe Raff) - other name suggestions would be good too!

Thanks so much!

I do much like the name Rafferty (I know a nice one), even though I always think of a raffle (Rafflety), and then feel grumpy because I never have any luck at even the most mundane raffles. Angry

RebeccaCloud9 · 12/10/2014 20:18

Hmm that was my worry Sad. Any better ideas? I'm thinking this baby will be 'baby boy' forever if it's team blue!

Surname issue is we're not married - so DP's, mine or a combo of both.

I like rafferty

CaptainAnkles · 12/10/2014 20:22

Saxophone solo. That's what my immediate thought was.

RebeccaCloud9 · 12/10/2014 20:23

Tsukuru thanks, great list - I agree about those 2 names, annoyed that DP doesn't agree! I love quite a few of those but family/close friends already have them.

I like the idea of Bennett as it has family connections but hadn't thought of it as a first name before - will add it to the possibles. Love Alexander and Caleb too.

I know a rafferty, he's called rafe for short.

I like it.

BabyGoose · 12/10/2014 20:29

It's lovely. Cute as a baby and strong as an adult.

Wordsaremything · 12/10/2014 20:31

Oh please no not rafferty something-something . No no no no!

PurplePidjin · 12/10/2014 20:32

If you want Raff, how about Raphael?

starlightloz · 12/10/2014 20:46

I love Raffy so Rafferty was a strong contender for one of my boys and I sometimes wish we had gone for it but I couldn't get past it sounding like a furniture shop. How about Tobias, Eli, Sebastian, Ezra or Elias? I tend to find double barrelled surnames don't get used in practise. Congratulations on your imminent arrival and I hope it all goes smoothly (smile)

moxon · 12/10/2014 20:52

Somehow the alternative to Rafferty, in my head at least, tonight at least, is Theodore.
Theo also nice and short if you have a double-barrel.

moxon · 12/10/2014 20:53

Oh, and IMO just choose the mother's surname. We need to establish this as common practise, so need more people to do it! Smile

RebeccaCloud9 · 12/10/2014 21:06

I love Ezra! Don't think we'll go double-barrelled in the end (I'm hoping we'll get engaged asap and go for DP's name really but if we don't, I don't want a different surname to the baby Sad).

On the surname issue - do you plan to/want to be married one day? (to your partner, obvs). If so, you are better to go with his surname, so you don't have to end up changing the child(ren)s after you get married. This was my issue - we're still not married yet and it can be a pain sometimes having a different surname, particularly if you want to travel abroad without your partner, but we are getting married soon and I felt like it was going in the wrong direction to give them my surname if I wanted to be married one day.

Oh and I like the name Rafferty by the way.

RebeccaCloud9 · 12/10/2014 21:14

Starlight I love Raffy, really cute nn for a little one.

maggie I really do but he is dragging his heels - probably a whole other thread there! I'm hoping we will, there's really no reason we wouldn't (IMO!). At first I joked to him that I would use my name if we weren't going to get engaged but now the time is getting closer I'm worried as I don't want it to become a bargaining chip or blackmail.
