Hello, we are struggling with names for dc2. She'll be a sister to Oliver - we had no idea how popular that would be so wanted something a bit more unusual but still very traditional and classical. Middle name is mcgregor and surname is 3 syllables beginning with h.

Name we like most at the moment is Emma but it seems a bit simple.

Names I like but can't use:
Maud
Helen
Amy
Octavia

Names dh likes but we can't use:
Elizabeth
Sarah
Victoria

We both liked Isabel bu have been put off due to it's popularity.

Any other suggestions gratefully received!!

Anna? It is somehow stronger and less simple than Emma, and I think more beautiful.

moxon · 09/10/2014 07:43

Katherine?
Olivia?
Audrey?
Vera?
Fiona?

Peanut15 · 09/10/2014 08:06

Anna, Audrey and Vera don't grab me.

Love love love Olivia but I couldn't have an Oliver and an Olivia could I!?

Katherine could be a contender. We'd have to shorten to Katie for everyday use - it seems a bit plain too, like Emma. We like queenly names though!

Thanks for the suggestions.

Olivia is also really popular so that may annoy you.

Beatrice
Florence

I don't think there is anything wrong with having both an Oliver and Olivia. It doesn't sound clunky when you say it together in everyday household context? I think what would be weird is having a third O-child. Grin
You could shorten to Kitty, which isn't quite so plain as Katie?
If Helen is out, could you have Helena? Or Eleanor (which sounds a bit like Helen/a when you say it?); or Leonora (Leo strikes me as a nice nn for a girl too; I suspect Nora wouldn't fit if you don't like Vera)

Artandco · 09/10/2014 08:38

Amelia
Eliza
Zara

Or same vibe as Isabel:
Arabella
Theodora
Penelope

FlipFantasia · 09/10/2014 08:41

How about Arabella? Can shorten it to Bell/Bella but still quite queenly and magnificent.

Or Annabelle?

Or Iona?

myfriendflickadee · 09/10/2014 09:06

How about Isadora instead of Isobel?

moxon · 09/10/2014 09:10

I love Isadora, thanks to Ms Duncan.

Kantha · 09/10/2014 09:58

Isolde
Gabriella
Caroline

minipie · 09/10/2014 13:20

Hmm, there's quite a divergence in the names you like. Some ideas:

Lucy
Ruth
Beth
Bethany
Briony
Emily
Cecily
Emmeline
Elise
Annabel
Margaret (lots of good nn options)
Verity
Imogen
Rebecca
Rosalind
Matilda
Juliet

Pantstootight · 09/10/2014 19:16

I don't think you could have an Oliver and an Olivia, what a strange suggestion!!
If you like queen type names what about
Charlotte
Alexandra
Beatrice
Mary
Caroline

Montsti · 09/10/2014 20:45

No Oliver and Olivia won't work??..

I have an Oliver and a Charlotte. Will call dd2 (due in a week) Annabel.

MrsPatMustard · 09/10/2014 20:56

Lara

Dogsmom · 09/10/2014 20:56

How about Esther, similar to Emma but much less popular, definitely Queenly as she was a Queen in the bible.

minkah · 09/10/2014 20:59

Go with Emma. You like it most, and it's perfect, very calm, clear, timeless, beautiful, totally un - faddy.

TheObligatoryNotQuiteSoNewGirl · 09/10/2014 21:26

What about Avelyn? I've just come across it in an early 20th century Angela Brazil novel. Unusual (I've never heard it before) but not in a way that people will think it's made up. Kind of a combination of the more popular Ava and Evelyn. They call her "Ave" for short, so I think it must be just two syllables: "Ave-lyn", which makes more sense than "Av-a-lyn".

MsCoconut · 10/10/2014 08:18

Yes, I don't think you can have an Oliver and an Olivia.

I like the suggestions of Charlotte and Katherine. Emma's nice too.

What about Edith? Eleanor? Matilda?

Emz1989 · 10/10/2014 19:06

Lara, Matilda, Theodora, Maisie, Elizabeth (lovely nn's - Lizzy, Libby etc.)
I personally agree though, Oliver and Olivia are too similar....

Irishkez · 12/10/2014 21:53

Emma is beautiful IMHO and so timeless!

I like Emma though. It has a simple, elegant dignity to it.

Selks · 13/10/2014 01:52

FastWindow · 13/10/2014 01:53
