Please help! We have a new baby Sofia in the family and my friend has a new girlfriend called Sophiya.

I've only seen these in writing, so I'm a bit worried about offending anyone!

I would say Sophie 'sO-fee', and Sophia 'suf-Ia'.

I'm wondering if Sofia should be So-fia (with o as in orange) - that's how I'd say the capital city.

And in Sophiya, should I say the 'y'? So su-fi-ya? I think she might be Polish if that makes a difference.

I know I'm overthinking this, but I know it's annoying when somebody says what they think your name is, rather than what it actually is. I think it's just the two variations at once that have made me go all anxious!

I think I would pronounce them both Soh-fee-ah. I also pronounce Sophia that way though, maybe I'm unimaginative :D

That's what I thought Hamsolo, they just look like spelling variations of 'Sophia' to me.

Can't you just ask?

poppydaisy · 06/10/2014 08:29

Just ask! They might pronounce it Sof-eye-a or Sof-ee-a. Don't guess, just ask them!

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 06/10/2014 17:55

Yes, I probably will ask, it's just I was a bit scared of getting a "If I'd wanted her to be called Sophia I'd have called her Sophia" type response. She can be a bit sharp sometimes, so I didn't want to accidentally 'insult' her PFB by pronouncing her name wrong!

The gf isn't so much of an issue, I just thought I'd ask at the same time. I thought somebody might say "oh, that's because in Polish 'ia' is pronounced xxxx, so you need the 'y' to get the two vowels" or "I have a baby/cousin/friend Sofia/Sofiya/Sophiya and she pronounces it xxx".

I have always assumed that they are variations of So-fia too.
