Pen is the nicest nickname.

Why is Penelope so popular at the moment?? It's a real head scratcher to me.

babyblabber · 06/10/2014 13:53

eh is it popular? I've never met one or even heard of one! one of the reasons I like it!

squoosh · 06/10/2014 14:02

In the past couple of years I seem to have met lots of people who considered/are considering Penelope for their daughter.

I think it will be the new Florence.

PfftTheMagicDraco · 06/10/2014 14:09

Mine is Penny, Penn, or Pops/Popsy (from PennyPops) as and when. When DD was born, there were 99 others in that year - seems to be getting more popular.

CheerfulYank · 06/10/2014 14:41

I think if the name has the sounds in it, it can be used as a nickname. :) So Polly and Poppy make sense to me.

Penelope called Polly makes more sense than Mary called Polly, at least to me.

Same with Nell. The name Nell is actually contained in Penelope but not Eleanor.

Nella?

ArsenicFaceCream · 06/10/2014 17:39

Loppy. Has to be.

Agree Mary > Polly is arbitrary madness.

Have a think through a few common nicknames and you'll soon realise that a huge proportion of nns are not just segments of the longer name…
James - Jim
Edward - Teddy - Ned
Christopher - Kit
Charlotte - Charlie
Katherine - Katie
Robert - Bob
Elizabeth - Libby
Amelie - Mimi

So I think you're being a little narrow in your judgement here?

Eggwhisk · 07/10/2014 07:54

I have just read a book where there was a character called Peppy, short for Penelope Grin

Trumpton · 07/10/2014 08:07

I always thought it was pronounced Pennylope when I read it , I was quite surprised as a child when I met my first Pen-ell-oh-pee . Grin

Same as PercyPhone . Oh per-sef-o-knee !

Penny as a short name but would prob be called Penny Plain after the stamp so not such a nice nickname in our family .

CheerfulYank · 07/10/2014 08:32

In the Stephen King book the Girl who Loved Tom Gordon there's a Penelope called Pepsi... I forgot about that. :)

Nella?

Castlemilk · 07/10/2014 10:10

I know two who are both Nell.

Nell is certainly along with Penny an accepted short form for Penelope.

Prefer Nell to Penny, though Pen is good.

TweeAintMee · 08/10/2014 20:05

How about Pink or Pinkie (as in the favourite colour of Lady P)?

TweeAintMee · 08/10/2014 20:06

Or even Punk?

TweeAintMee · 08/10/2014 20:06

Or Pelly?

MeganChips · 08/10/2014 20:09

I love Penelope, nn Penny. It goes really well with your other two names.

MollyBdenum · 08/10/2014 20:13

I like Nell or Pippy. But the best nicknames tend to evolve. I thought that DD would be shortened to Tansy, but she's ended up as a Tass.

concernedaboutheboy · 08/10/2014 20:14

'My' penelope is a Pip. Not Dd, a friend. Other friends have a penelope who is a Pene but pron. Penny.

TheNewStatesman · 08/10/2014 21:13

Can't believe nobody has said Peppa!

Szeli · 18/10/2014 05:58

friend's dd gets penfold most of the time
