Girls' names... I'm over thinking this, aren't I?

DS is Frederick, often known as Freddie. I like that he has a (to me) strong, serious 'long' name, but also an obvious nickname, plus other nickname choices if he wants them later. Most of the names we've picked if this bump is a girl are in a similar vein, with Penelope, Annabelle and Beatrice all being contenders.

I also really like Alice and Polly, but I'm not sure they work together quite as well- they're much shorter, and don't really have nickname potential- in fact Polly already is the nickname, technically- so I'd always be calling them by their full name. It just doesn't sound right for me.

Is that an issue? Or are pregnancy hormones driving me mad? Confused

Frederick and Alice = a lovely combination.

You could make Polly a Pollyanna?

Lizzie in The Archers has Freddie and Lily - one clearly a shortened form and the other not. So maybe you're overthinking.

Love all the names, btw.

In one of those bizarre M to P twists, Polly us actually a nn for Mary. Like Peggy is short for Margaret.

Lunastarfish · 04/10/2014 20:19

Charlotte nn Lottie
Elizabeth (too many nn)
Evelyn (nn Evie)

but Frederick and Alice are lovely!

AlpacaYourThings · 04/10/2014 20:21

Polly is a NN for Mary? But it has more letters Confused so very Confused

DanyStormborn · 04/10/2014 21:08

Yep Molly and Polly were both originally nicknames for Mary. Some nicknames are longer like Gracie for Grace or Annie for Anne.

I also like long names with nicknames like your son's name. I wouldn't pick Polly. But Alice is a lovely name. But if you really prefer long names with nicknames maybe go for one of you other options, I love some short names but know I would miss having a cute nickname to use.

Lucia (loo-chee-a)
Alessia
Arianna/Aria
Elenora

I had to put some Italian names because I think they are beautiful, but maybe I'm a little biased

I like Penelope/Polly best. I like Annabel and Beatrice with Frederick too but they don't have an obvious nn. Alice is ok but shorter than Frederick, and a bit sharp sounding imo. I think Penelope/Polly works really well with Frederick / Freddie. They are both long with a short nn. I don't think you're over thinking it. Although Fred(erick) and Annabel would be a nice tennis playing theme. (Perry and Croft)

BotoxednSpanxed · 05/10/2014 11:21

What about Penny instead of Polly? that fits in with your style.

squeak2392 · 06/10/2014 04:44

I much prefer to have a longer name and a nn too. Names that are actually short are fine though, imo. Alice is lovely. You never though, she might develop he nn Ally or something completely different.
Polly is lovely too, and I would use it on it's own, but I can see why it might bother you.

Rather than Pollyanna, which pp suggested (personally I think it's OTT and assocaited too much with the awful girl of the eponymous book) how about Polly-Anne? /Polly-Ann/Pollyann/Pollyanne
Maybe double-barrelling could be an option for your shorter names? Alice-Josephine, Alice-Marie

Frederick and Alice is lovely though :)

ShanghaiDiva · 06/10/2014 04:55

I like Frederick and Alice. Not keen on Polly.
Frederick and caroline would be nice, nickname Caro.

CheerfulYank · 06/10/2014 04:58

I think you should go with Margaret and call her Maggie or Meg. (I have a Margaret Wink)

I'm in the same boat; pregnant with DC3 and would like a formal name with a nickname, yet love Phoebe.

Fwiw I think Frederick and Alice sound lovely, but Penelope is pretty too. It's on my short list this time around.

Montsti · 06/10/2014 18:41

I also prefer longer names with decent nns so I personally would rule out Polly.

Alice is a difficult one as I really like it but ended up not choosing it as thought it was too short with no decent nn. potential! We've chosen Annabel over Alice...

We've also got Charlotte nn.Lottie and an Oliver nn.Ollie. If no.3 had been another boy, he would've been Frederick nn.Freddie!
