Parents used our favourite name for the dog...

So what alternatives to Jasper can we use for a boy?

We've not found out what we're having. Our daughter. has a very unusual name but not sure we'd choose something that different again.

Other names that have been considered and vetoed for one reason or another are Rowan, Ernest, Frederick, Tobin. Girls names I think we're sorted for (although wouldn't say no to any good suggestions).

Torin
Wreford
Conrad
Jago

enriquetheringbearinglizard · 01/10/2014 21:54

For me Jasper is one of the inept villains in 101 Dalmations Sad

I actually outdid myself because it was only once I was pregnant that I realized I wanted our own dog's name for a DS. Fortunately DC turned out to be a DD Grin

Other ideas are Luc, Adam, Eddie, Simeon, Marc, Stefan, Darragh, Freddie.

dollius · 01/10/2014 21:58

Felix

LittleLostRoeDeer · 01/10/2014 22:14

Torin was on our list, but not sure if it'll now be vetoed in the new 'can't be too different' criteria.

I'm beginning to wonder (hope?) if it'll just be a girl and solve all of our probems.

My sister named her dog after our nan. I still intend to use the name if we have a girl

parques · 01/10/2014 22:18

What is the 'hated' nickname for Gabriel? I have a Gabriel.... he's always called 'Gabriel'! Hmm

NoArmaniNoPunani · 01/10/2014 22:44

Gay presumably

Patrickstarisabadbellend · 01/10/2014 22:45

Nigel! For the love of god will someone name their kid Nigel!

ElephantsNeverForgive · 01/10/2014 22:48

I never did work out which came first, my DSIS or DDad's cousin's dalmatian.

DSIS has fortunately long out live the spotty hound.

AndHarry · 01/10/2014 22:55

Only a UKIP supporter with the fervency of a work-experience Parliamentary aide would name their child Nigel just now. Surely?

Julian is much nicer than Jolyon.

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 01/10/2014 23:32

How about Casper or Kasper.

Sophronia · 02/10/2014 00:30

Felix or Milo?

Pompompompom · 02/10/2014 00:38

Casper

spidey66 · 02/10/2014 00:56

My brother and sil were going to call my niece Daisy but changed their mind as that's my other brother's dog's name. Imagine the confusion at family events.....'Daisy, come for your dinner' and a toddler and a dog both run to the kitchen.

Dinnerfor1 · 02/10/2014 10:06

I think Gabe is the nickname for Gabriel.

NewEraNewMindset · 02/10/2014 10:18

Yes, Gabe, I just don't like it and having been given a name myself with the most terrible one option of a nickname I spent my whole adolescence asking people not to shorten it.

NewEraNewMindset · 02/10/2014 10:19

Which got tedious and you always risk offence when someone is just trying to be friendly.

RiverTam · 02/10/2014 10:24

I'm not keen on Gabe either.

for what it's worth, here's my list from the 'what's your boys top 5' thread.

Ezra
Elijah
Rowan (I appreciate you've already said no to that)
Keir
Lucas

LittleLostRoeDeer · 02/10/2014 13:19

I quite like Ezra. Rowan could still be on the list! I still like it a lot. DP loves Lucas but I'm not keen.

What about some nature type suggestions? Anyone got any good ones that would actually be usable? I've suggested Bay and Sage in the past... Forrest is a no go because of our surname.

OP posts:
RiverTam · 02/10/2014 13:36

Leaf/Leif? Though depending on what your surname is, anything tree-related might be a bit daft - oh, but you said Woody had been on your list, didn't you?

The vicar of our local church was called Frog, no idea if it was his real name.

Tiger
Bear
Ellwood (DH loved this!)
Flint (child in DD's nursery called this, thought it a little harsh-sounding myself)
Hawk
Wolfie
River
Robin
Rain

BigfootFiles · 02/10/2014 13:38

Woody is a euphemism for an erection in the UK too.

BigfootFiles · 02/10/2014 13:45

Asher sounds similar to Jasper. From Hebrew, means 'happy/fortunate'. Nickname Ash, gives you a nature connection.

rembrandtsrockchick · 02/10/2014 14:23

Aspen.
Oakley.
Ash.
Arran
Tamar

Finola1step · 02/10/2014 14:33

Crispin
Sebastian
Juilian

Castlemilk · 04/10/2014 12:06

Now I like Asher but would never use either this or Ashley as the nickname 'ash' just makes me think of fags. Urgh. Fag ash. Ashtray. Yuk.
