Noa for a girl

I have always loved the name Noah for if I have a boy but it's become so popular and I would really like to give my child a name that is a bit more unusual so they aren't in a class/workplace with other people who have the same name. I recently heard of Noa being a girls name... love it or hate it?

It may be pretty and feminine sounding, but if you ask the next 100 people you meet whether "Noa/Noah" is a girl or a boy, they will say boy. If they see it written down they might hesitate, but will probably think that it's a "new" spelling of Noahm and therefore a boy.

Why is it OK to give girls boy's names and not vice versa?

stinkingbishop · 01/10/2014 07:08

It's pretty, but I think it sounds like a perfume (which it actually is) or a car...

OwlCapone · 01/10/2014 07:08

I think it's a lovely name, but a girl will have a lifetime of "boys name" comments. Also, even if it is uncommon for a girl, it is still common for boys so doesn't really fit the "one in a class" criteria.

SanityClause · 01/10/2014 07:23

I do like it. I think there was recently a read where someone said it is fairly commonly used in The Netherlands?

I do think the popularity of Noah for boys may cause a few problems, and as she gets older, she will be either "Noa - no aitch" or "Noa - En Oh Ay", but it's not rare for people to have to spell out even quite common names like Isobel or Elizabeth, which have more than one spelling.

I do like Noor, suggested above, but Nola is ghastly!

PurpleSharpie · 01/10/2014 09:40

Lovely but they'll have to keep spelling it out.

minkah · 01/10/2014 10:44

I don't think they will have to keep spelling it out. I think the next generation will be more receptive to unusual names than the current one, and more flexible.

Although I suppose if standards of literacy keep dropping you might have to spell out anything, even a three letter name.

So, at least it's only three letters!

Anyway, each time she spells it out, people wil say 'how lovely,"

I predict there will be enough Noa little girls around for the name to be recognised. Once word gets out about this name, it will be used, cos it's lovely!

minniemaus · 01/10/2014 10:54

I also know a Noa and don't have think she's ever had to spell out her name or been mistaken for a boy Wink.

Lovely, simple, feminine name imo.

OwlCapone · 01/10/2014 10:54

Well, people have to keep spelling out Catherine/Katherine/Katharine Jane/Jayne Sarah/Sara, Isabel/Isobel/Isabelle.....

Trying to tie spelling it out in with falling literacy standards is daft :) names have had to be spelt out for years and years.

OwlCapone · 01/10/2014 10:55

lord knows how "link" was corrected to tie. Falling literacy standards indeed Wink

RiverTam · 01/10/2014 10:59

I think it's quite pretty, but I think it looks nicer than it sounds.

Nia?
Norah?

minkah · 01/10/2014 11:00

Owl I was joakin!

OwlCapone · 01/10/2014 11:07

Judging by the crap sentence construction in my post, you are right to be concerned.

Hakluyt · 01/10/2014 17:46

"I predict there will be enough Noa little girls around for the name to be recognised."

Good. The very thought will stop all the "Oh, my baby must have a unique name to show how very individual I am, not like you sheep like mundanes" brigade from saddling their child with it.

Dovahkiin · 01/10/2014 18:28

How about 'Noor'? Very pretty Arabic name.

ShadowStar · 01/10/2014 18:42

It's too much like the boy's name Noah for me.

HoltBegins · 01/10/2014 18:50

It's a nice name. Here in Spain it is very popular. On the levels of Amelia in the UK. We always met loads in the park.

HoltBegins · 01/10/2014 18:53

I find it funny that people are saying it's a boys name. My friend wanted to name her DS Noah but because she is in Spain her DH told her no way because it was a girls name and their DS would get teased at school.

mrsminiverscharlady · 01/10/2014 18:58

My friends have a little girl called Now. Apparently the traditional Hebrew way to pronounce it is No-or but the two syllables kind of blended.

I love the name.

skylark2 · 01/10/2014 19:04

I have a classic name with multiple spellings. I've always had to spell it out for people, and even then I have to sort out mistakes on a regular basis. It's a complete PITA, and I don't even have to deal with people getting my gender wrong.

Both my kids have gender-obvious names with one standard spelling. I'm not into making someone else's life difficult because I think it's cute and it might not be an issue in the future.

ashesandfire · 01/10/2014 19:07

I think it's beautiful
I much prefer Noa for a girl to Noah for a boy

Hakluyt · 01/10/2014 19:10

Oh, skylark- please can we have a baby together and call it something simple and gender specific? Like Mary or Peter. Or Andrew or Laura. Which also have the advantage of being incredibly unusual.............Grin

PestoSurfissimos · 01/10/2014 19:10

Isn't it a line of clothing?

mrsminiverscharlady · 01/10/2014 19:12

Sorry, damn autocorrect, friends daughter is called Noa, not Now ffs.

chaya5738 · 01/10/2014 21:22

I love it soooooooooo much! If we have another, it would be top of our list.

It reminds me of Yitzak Rabin's marvellous grand-daughter.

DinoSnores · 01/10/2014 21:43

Noah, the daughter of Zelophehad (now there's a name that needs to come back!), is mentioned in Numbers 27, when she and her sisters are allowed to inherit upon their father's death, and so it changes inheritance law allowing daughters to inherit in the Old Testament.
