If me and partner ever have a boy he wants to call it Dave, and I'm very against this name as I think it's not suitable for a baby it's like an old man's name, I love the name tommy!!!!

Have I got news for you?

Alisvolatpropiis · 28/09/2014 17:11

Tommy isn't very appropriate for an adult man.

So swings and roundabouts.

Would David/Thomas be on the birth certificate?

Kantha · 28/09/2014 18:10

DH initially suggested this in jest for DS1. It just reminded me of 'Baby Dave' on 'the Royal Family'.

I do however like David and Thomas. There's not much between them.

Branleuse · 28/09/2014 18:16

Old men, generally started off as babies. They didnt just all change their name to Dave once they turned 50

PrincessAnnaOfArundale · 28/09/2014 19:48

I actually think David is a beautiful name (it's my DH's name and he's not old!) It think Dave is quite cute to be honest but I am aware I may be on my own in thinking that!

Madamecastafiore · 28/09/2014 19:49

Baby David!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 28/09/2014 19:50

Dp is Dave. I think David is lovely for a little boy, but not Dave.

LEMmingaround · 28/09/2014 19:50

My dp is dave. I like david.

tethersend · 28/09/2014 19:51

I like it. Very Dogger.

ByTheWishingWell · 28/09/2014 19:51

I'm not so sure of Dave on a baby, I do like David though. He could shorten it to Dave when he's an old man. Smile It feels about the same as Bob and Robert to me.

StaircaseAtTheUniversity · 28/09/2014 19:53

I only have a daughter at the moment and I think in general girls are easier to name, but if I do ever have a son I intend on naming him something which works for a boy and then into adulthood and also in formal/informal contexts so David/Dave, Thomas/Tom, Stephen/Steve etc are perfect IMO.

Dinosaursdontgrowontrees · 28/09/2014 19:53

I think it's lovely. Dave/ David so cute!

Yama · 28/09/2014 19:55

David and the nickname Dave are both Great.

I'm not keen on Tom, Thomas or Tommy. Here, in Scotland you would run the risk of him being called Tam.

LaurieFairyCake · 28/09/2014 19:55

David is a totally normal solid name.

Better than something that sounds like toilet cleaner or a made up name that people is a name.

'Chan i qwa' Hmm

Not even the closer Shaniqua but exactly as above for a boy

TooSpotty · 28/09/2014 20:00

I have a David. To be honest I don't like Dave and it almost put me off using the name but (a) I thought it was a bit control freaky to worry about nicknames and (b) I know adult Davids so figured it wasn't inevitable that he would end up Dave.

He is 1 now and my DD of course calls him Dave.

MyFirstName · 28/09/2014 20:00

You cannot. He will forever be haunted by cries of "Hello Dave" from the League of Gentlemen. knows from bitter experience from DH trying to call the dog Dave

littlesupersparks · 28/09/2014 20:03

David nn Davy? My friend has a little brother Davy, it's cute!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 28/09/2014 20:05

Yes, Davy much nicer than Dave for a little person!

ThursdayLast · 28/09/2014 20:27

David is a great strong name.
I agree Davie sounds more child appropriate than Dave, but that's only because I over thinking it!

TeaAndALemonTart · 28/09/2014 20:30

Davey is a cool name.

Bluestocking · 28/09/2014 20:39

David is a great, strong name for a man, and Davey is a sweet shortening for a littl'un. I honestly don't think The League of Gentlemen's "Hello Dave" is a ubiquitous catchphrase and shouldn't put you off!

BeattieBow · 28/09/2014 20:42

reminds me of Dogger too. V cute.

Asleeponasunbeam · 28/09/2014 20:47

I love it too. Went for a similar name in style (70's schoolboy I guess) for DS (2) and have not regretted it. I love Dogger though! I nearly went for Nick/ Nicky after the little boy in the Mog books.

angeltulips · 28/09/2014 20:50

My brother is David - mum hates Dave and insisted that he be a Davey. Ofc all his friends call him Dave, but he is Davey to his family. I like it!

Lweji · 28/09/2014 20:53

He will forever be haunted by cries of "Hello Dave" from the League of Gentleman

Nobody will remember LoG in 6 or 7 years, not kids, anyway.

I don't particularly like Dave, though, and would prefer David.
