Elijah?

Honest opinions please!

Ds3 due in 10 wks and we are struggling with a name. I really like Elijah but the reaction from children has almost unanimously been "but that's a girl's name!"
The reaction from adults has been a bit luke-warm.

Any alternative suggestions welcome.

I love it. It was on my short list for DS but DP vetoed it.

I've never heard of it being a girls name Confused

It does have religious roots originating from the Old Testament FYI.

Eminybob · 26/09/2014 10:36

Eli or Elliot as alternatives?

ProfYaffle · 26/09/2014 10:38

Love it, it was on our shortlist too but we had dd's so didn't get to use it!

I chose it because Eli is a family name but I preferred Elijah. Never heard anyone say it's a girl's name though Confused

Xmasbaby11 · 26/09/2014 10:39

I love it. I don't think it's unusual around here and always a boys name.

Mumto3dc · 26/09/2014 10:43

Thanks!
Yes it's definitely a boys name, it just worries me that it must sound like a girls name to children (there are no Elijahs round here so they aren't familiar with the name)

I think it sounds horrible and looks even worse written down. I can just picture Elijah Wood's big bug eyes

Mumto3dc · 26/09/2014 14:06

Lol, that's a strong negative reaction!!

I like Elijah and especially Eli but I do think it's a bit of a marmite name.

What other names are you considering?

ARGHtoAHHH · 26/09/2014 14:09

I love it. Eli for short - has a lovely sound to it.

ineveram · 26/09/2014 14:09

Sounds too biblical for some reason. Sounds like something a Mormon or Hamish person would name their child.
Okay if you are ultra religious I suppose.

cookielove · 26/09/2014 17:19

I love it, but I am biased as my 6 week Elijah is sleeping on my chest! We shorten it to Eli or use it in full. :)

CruCru · 26/09/2014 17:37

Where are you? I know a few so it may not be as unusual as you'd think.

eatyourveg · 26/09/2014 17:44

I know a 13 yr old Elijah

spudmasher · 26/09/2014 17:58

It's a no from me. I prefer Isaac. Or Luke. Easier to say. Just my humble opinion though. You must choose what is right for you. You'll know as soon as you set eyes on him. It will become apparent.

Gileswithachainsaw · 26/09/2014 18:04

I like it Smile

pearlgirl · 26/09/2014 18:10

I love it - ds4 is Elijah - so I am a bit biased - he is mostly known as Eli.

PetShopGirl · 26/09/2014 18:17

I agree with a PP about it not looking very good written down. I have a small Elijah very close to me and who I love very much, but I wince every time I write his birthday cards etc. There's something quite inelegant about it.

BunnyLebowski · 26/09/2014 18:29

I really dislike it.

It sounds and looks quite unpleasant and is too religious.

HaroldLloyd · 26/09/2014 18:31

Eli is getting used a fair bit now.

I think people are on have hunt for lesser used biblical names as Noah has been done loads.

Alisvolatpropiis · 26/09/2014 19:28

It's a great name.

Have never heard of it being a girls name.

Isaiah is in a similar vein of name.

comedaygoday · 26/09/2014 20:51

Biased here as DS1 is an Elijah. I really like it. He is the only one in his primary school.

CeriBerry · 27/09/2014 09:57

I love love love it!
Not keen on Eli though

maggiethemagpie · 27/09/2014 10:51

I love it. Couldn't use it for my son as his cousin is an Eli so went for Zachary instead, another biblical fave

babyblabber · 27/09/2014 11:49

I know a 4 year old Elijah and it suits him perfectly. he's a little cutie and his name is lovely I think.

I also love Eli but his mum does not so he's always Elijah. Elton john has an Elijah I think.

Farah33 · 27/09/2014 12:02

Love Elijah, 3 year old ds2 is called this. People seem to like it. We shorten it to Lije or Lijey. He calls himself Lijah. We pronounce it with a hard j but lots of people pronounce with a soft j which I'm not so keen on.
