Our beautiful little girl was born this morn. We are delighted!

Had aoife, Juliet and cara on the short list for girls, but now we both like Isla. However it's very very popular (no. 4 in scotland). Should we just go with it, or consider alternatives? Advice and /or suggestions appreciated!

Thanks in advance.

CoNgRaTuLaTiOnS Flowers :)

I would consider alternatives if it was me :)

She doesn't need to be named before sundown and she'll have her name her whole life (well, unless you saddle her with something ghastly and she changes it by deed poll Grin).

Just enjoy her being here and think about it over a few days.

Or we can start listing options Grin

flipchart · 24/09/2014 14:07

Congratulations! Hope you are feeling ok!!

Love the name.
It's popular for a reason!! I would pick it if you both like it

SavoyCabbage · 24/09/2014 14:07

It's lovely and it you like it and you don't mind it being popular then it's not an issue.

Don't rush into it though. You don't have to call her anything for a bit. I let other people's expectations that I should decide on a name push me into choosing one when I wasn't sure or ready.

Ticklemonster897 · 24/09/2014 14:12

Iona is similar. Have to admit in know lots of Islas but it is a nice name.

Aiofe is stunning too

Ticklemonster897 · 24/09/2014 14:13

Register her name in 6 weeks to buy you time. The right name will become more obvious the more time you have with her

All your other names are nicer.

Little Islas are ten a penny round these parts.

Oh and Congratulations Thanks Thanks Brew Grin

Polonium · 24/09/2014 14:16

It's a bit too common in Scotland for my liking.

I prefer Juliet.

SomeSunnySunday · 24/09/2014 14:58

It's a lovely name, but I do know lots and lots of Islas. 2 in Dc1's class (out of 16). There's at least one Isla at every group we go to. That might not bother you though. I'm surprised it's only at no. 4 (we're in Scotland too) - it seems to be the girl name around here.

Live the suggestion of Iona. Or Aoife, or Juilet, or Cara - you can't really go wrong with any of those.

Middleagedmotheroftwo · 24/09/2014 15:01

I love Cara. For its sound, and its meaning. Much nicer than Isla IMO.

nicename · 24/09/2014 15:04

Ailsa? Such a sweet sounding name... unless your surname is Craig of course.

Congratulations!

SoonMeansNever · 24/09/2014 15:10

I think Isla is lovely, depends where you live tho, do you mind lots of other kids at school etc having the same name?
We didn't name DS1 for 5 days, and took 4wks to name DS2 Grin.
Iona is a beautiful alternative as suggested ^^, and I've met an Ishbel too - apparently a Scottish Islands version of Isabel.
Congratulations! ??

shakemysilliesout · 24/09/2014 15:22

I vote Juliet- so many Islas round my way!

Lovely but common. Remember popular names not evenly distributed. You cannot sling a stone down the street in west end Glasgow without hitting a little Isla. Other areas not so bad. I didn't take this regional variation into account.

Nb: 21 days to register in Scotland not 6 weeks

BunnyLebowski · 24/09/2014 15:42

I agree with Middle btw.

Cara is gorgeous and the meaning is lovely Smile .

Username12345 · 24/09/2014 15:43

Too popular for me.

Honsepricesarecrazy · 24/09/2014 15:45

Never heard of an Isla

flipchart · 24/09/2014 15:46

I have never met an Isla, I don't know anyone that has an Isla!

I have been working with young children for 31 years and I've never come across one! Even when I have been visiting Scotland which I do about 5 times a year!
Where are they all?

LolaBelle211 · 24/09/2014 15:52

I am biased because I have an Isla but I love the name and not met any others yet. She is 2 and a half. There are some other lovely suggestions, really like the Ayla version as well, our Isla was certainly popular in turkey and now I know why!

ataposaurus · 24/09/2014 15:52

Hi, this is my daughter's name although with a variant spelling. She is 6 - when we named her it was not so popular, I even checked the statistics and it was number 60 or so in England. Now it is everywhere, which is absiolutely gutting, and has caused me lots of stress, although maybe I am just strange! Luckily there are none at her school (as yet). However, I would not choose it now, which makes me quite sad. Pick something else, your other names are lovely and I don't think you would regret it.

cherrybombxo · 24/09/2014 16:07

I love it!

flipchart · 24/09/2014 16:26

atapos.
It causes you stress and is gutting? Really?
What a very odd reaction!

Jesus! You are going to need therapy if another kid with the same name turns up at school!

Hi, yes you are probably right - having a bit of a bad day so maybe that was a bit forceful, clearly someone does need to tell me to get a grip! However, just meant I think it can be nice to have a name that isn't uberpopular and I do regret a bit picking one that subsequently rocketed!

moxon · 24/09/2014 16:43

If you like it, who cares if it is popular. Pp said she never met one even in Scotland. And it's a lovely name.
