Is this a unisex name?

We are thinking of using the name for a boy.

Laiken Frederick Coughlin.

Thoughts?

Reverse the names and I think you have a winner.

busyDays · 21/09/2014 10:39

I've never heard it before but would probably assume it was scandinavian. I would have no idea if it was a girl or a boy and wouldn't be sure how to pronounce it either. Sorry not much help!

ScrambledEggAndToast · 21/09/2014 10:45

Frederick is much nicer as the first name

bac1985 · 21/09/2014 13:39

Laiken is pronounced LAY-KIN.

It's a variant of Lake.

Other names are Laik and Laike.

Is this a unisex name?

Behindthename:

LAIKEN
GENDER: Feminine
USAGE: Afrikaans

I'm going to go with, no.

Even without looking it up it sounds to feminine for my taste.

Sophronia · 21/09/2014 16:18

I agree that Frederick is nicer as the first name.

cece · 21/09/2014 16:20

I agree I thought it must be a girls name.

NerfHerder · 21/09/2014 16:21

Is it Skandi?

Makes me think of Laika. Laika means 'Barker' by the way! Grin

bac1985 · 21/09/2014 16:23

What about the name Lake?

OP posts:
NerfHerder · 21/09/2014 16:23

btw- do a google image search on 'Laiken'... primarily pink results. Make of that what you will.

outer · 21/09/2014 16:23

I would have pronounced it "like-en"

Which makes me think of Lichen.

NerfHerder · 21/09/2014 16:24

Lake is not a name. Lake is a large body of water.

(I know, that's harsh, but I'm playing devil's advocate here, as that is the first thing that will enter people's heads. Unless you live in Hollywood.)

NerfHerder · 21/09/2014 16:26

Are you hipsters?
Do you live in a condo in SoHo (the original, not London)?

Or do you live in a 3-bed semi in Goldalming?

bluejeansandbabies · 21/09/2014 16:27

Laiken strikes me as a boys name OP.
I would assume male form of Laika, clearly not based on earlier posts but I wouldn't blink at it for a boy.

PotOfYoghurt · 21/09/2014 16:32

Is there a Soho older than the one in London? Hmm

bac1985 · 21/09/2014 16:42

Yes it is unisex. It's a bit different I'll give you that.

Any other names (not Blake) that have a 'lake' sound to them?

OP posts:
kelda · 21/09/2014 16:43

I've only known it to be a girl's name.

bac1985 · 21/09/2014 16:46

You know someone called Laiken?

Is she happy with that name?

OP posts:
MotherOfInsomniacToddlers · 21/09/2014 16:50

My immediate reaction is that it's a range of furniture from ikea.....

kelda · 21/09/2014 16:50

The name suits her. The main problem you might have is pronunciation.

bac1985 · 21/09/2014 17:23

Gender to one side. Does Laik, Laike or Laiken sound like a good name?

OP posts:
NerfHerder · 21/09/2014 21:21

potofyoghurt the original SoHo is in New York- it is short for South of Houston (st).

Floggingmolly · 21/09/2014 21:25

No, op, none of those names sound good. Really.

snice · 21/09/2014 21:27

'fraid not-Soho in London is the original, dating from the 17thC

Hakluyt · 21/09/2014 21:28

"Gender to one side. Does Laik, Laike or Laiken sound like a good name?"

No.
