Name agony... for our son

Hi, going through all names' lists and still cannot set on two (we would like him to have two names) . The name must be rather straightforward sounding in Dutch, Polish and English (or be easily understood in Polish or Dutch)... So far, we figured:

Leon
Theodore ( Teodor - have you ever came across this spelling?)
Maximilian
Jan

and...

Ferdinand

We cannot agree on any combination. I like Leon Maximilian and Teodor Jan

Our surname is short H...r.

Any thoughts? Any other names also appreciated.

Love Ferdinand!

Timetoask · 17/09/2014 15:02

Leon Maximilian sounds lovely! Really strong and original.

Lunastarfish · 17/09/2014 21:32

Johan
Haris
Andre
Luka

Love Ferdinand (!)

DorrieNoGoblin · 17/09/2014 21:55

Jan will be pronounced wrong in English - as in 'Janet' rather than as in 'Jan Peter Balkenende'. Teodor would confuse Dutch and English alike, I think. They'd both 'get it' but it'd come across as an inventive spelling. Sorry.

Ferdinand is excellent and I love Maximilian too.

Ferdinand Leon

BellaVida · 17/09/2014 21:59

I was going to say Leon Ferdinand with your surname H..r. Very strong name.

DorrieNoGoblin · 17/09/2014 22:00

yy, Leon Ferdinand does work better. I agree.

Orangeisthenewbanana · 17/09/2014 22:03

Really like Leon and Maximilian from your list. How about:

Lucas/Lukas
Peter
Michael
Alexander

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 17/09/2014 22:07

Ferdinand is beautiful. Theodore don't like, Theo is quite nice though. I wouldn't spell it Teodore though as people may not pronounce the th and may say teeodore.
Jan is nice. I assume it will pronouced Yan.
Maximillion is awful sorry quiet like Max though.

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 17/09/2014 22:08

I love Ferdinand. Ferdie makes a brilliant nickname!

squeak2392 · 18/09/2014 01:58

I like Theodore and Maximillian. Teodor I've never seen before, but it sounds like some sort of matador. Fyodor would be understood here too.

I don't really like Leon or Jan. If I didn't know it was a boy though, I'd think it was pn Jan like Janet, like someone said.

I don't like Ferdinand personally, but I'll not deny someone the use of a classic name. How about Frederick instead? Or some other spelling. I like Freddie.

mistyegg · 18/09/2014 02:16

David
Conrad
Oliver
Sebastian
Victor
Oscar
Casper

mistyegg · 18/09/2014 02:26

Robert
Daniel
Philip
Dominic
Gabriel

mistyegg · 18/09/2014 02:27

Adam

mathanxiety · 18/09/2014 06:46

Mariusz (I would leave the spelling with the z)
Jakub (though the English J sound is not used in Dutch or Polish)
Dominik
Oskar
Adrian
Stanislaw (you could substitute a v for the w perhaps)
Konrad
Marek
Norbert
Fabian

all would work in Dutch and Polish afaik. Leon and Ferdinand would be nice.

I've seen a good few Teodors, but I know a lot of Poles.

I think to work in Polish, you would need to use the Maksymilian spelling for Maximilian.

Delphiniumsblue · 18/09/2014 06:51

Leon Ferdinand

KatieKaye · 18/09/2014 06:56

I'd go for Tadeusz (Theodor in Polisg)Tad for short. Love this name! It might be slightly unusual but most people can work out how to pronounce it.

grufallosfriend · 18/09/2014 10:13

Agree - Taddeus is a cool name!

Legionofboom · 18/09/2014 12:35

Ferdinand is brilliant. I knew a lovely one known as Ferdy.

I love Theodore but Ferdinand stands out from your list.

nasara · 18/09/2014 13:18

Our little boy is due in 9 days and we've chosen the name Leon Sebastian, so I'm a bit biased Grin. Very pleased that there have been lots of positive comments towards the name Leon.

Ferdinand is pretty cool too.

Maximilian/Theodore (Max/Theo) are a bit less distinctive, if that matters.

Jan doesn't work so well.

DogCalledRudis · 18/09/2014 14:03

Jan is very nice name, but in an English speaking country Ian would be better.

BlueChampagne · 18/09/2014 14:37

Carl/Karl
Marcus/Markus

Another vote for Conrad/Konrad

mathanxiety · 18/09/2014 19:47

Casimir might work too.

birdofthenorth · 18/09/2014 20:31

Leon Maximillion is fab.

Happydutchmummy · 18/09/2014 20:37

Lucas, Sebastian, Tomas, Daniel, Robert,

sidorek · 19/09/2014 22:14

Thank you so much for your input :)
I must say that Ferdinand is growing on me and DH like it as well, so we may consider it for second name. Also, clarifying how name would be perceived (like Jan) is very helpful.
Many of the names you all had suggested are already in use in close family, so they would be a no (like Thadeus).
I love Casimir:)
