I am unashamedly starting another baby name thread Wink promise this is the last one (today anyway)

Another poster suggested Mabel to me, it's a name I LOVE but had discounted because a few years ago had a dog we called Mabel. However said dog only lived a couple of months and very few people were even aware what we had called the dog.

Is this a deal breaker? I'm starting to think not so much! Why oh why did I use a name I love on an animal knowing that we were ttc?

Apart from the above, do you like the name? Do you think it goes with big brother Eli?

Probably varies on where you live I suspect

Devora · 16/09/2014 18:56

I like it.

StrawberryCheese · 16/09/2014 18:59

I really like it, also love the Welsh version too.

BalloonSlayer · 16/09/2014 19:02

Agree with the batwing-glasses-and-housecoat impression.

My Yorkshire stepfather used to say "Mabel under t'table" - dunno whether that was a saying oop north or just one of the daft things he used to say.

TortoiseUpATreeAgain · 16/09/2014 19:04

I like Mabel; I know a few small Mabels so it doesn't seem old-ladyish to me at all. And it's shooting steadily up the rankings (look at the darkgreener graph) so I don't think anyone will raise an eyebrow at it in another five years.

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 16/09/2014 19:12

My grandmother was Bernice Mabel.
I love it.

Bernice-rhymes-with-furnace BTW, not Ber-NEECE.

I like mabel-but my DM is called mabel and she has always hated it

MillyONaire · 16/09/2014 20:15

I like Maybelle - like in Prizzi's Honor (I think)
So longer emphasis on the vowels. then she could be May or Belle if she wanted

MillyONaire · 16/09/2014 20:16

or maybe that should be more emphasis on the belle.....

missmargot · 16/09/2014 20:19

I love it, it was on my radar had DS have been a girl.

burgatroyd · 16/09/2014 21:10

I also really love Mabelline

DramaAlpaca · 16/09/2014 22:10

I really dislike Mabel, sorry.

callipygian00 · 16/09/2014 22:14

I love it, but probably only because I played Mabel in Mack and Mabel, and totally loved the character. If you'd asked me before then I'd probably have said it was awful, but I guess that shows how much the person makes the name.

Sophronia · 16/09/2014 22:59

I really like it.

Squirm · 17/09/2014 10:30

I like it very much! I think it will be uber popular in a few years.

Idontseeanysontarans · 17/09/2014 10:36

It's a pretty name but being a Northener I always hear it pronounced as May-bull which takes the shine off it a little! Of course if you're a posh Southener then you won't have that issue Wink

Gemerama82 · 17/09/2014 16:42

I'm in the south and I have only ever heard it pronounced as may- bull too.

littlejohnnydory · 17/09/2014 16:43

I love it! It was actually a close contender for this baby and the previous one. but then I also love Doris, Kitten!

lisej · 18/09/2014 10:01

I really really really dislike it. Sorry. Three of my friends have all called their daughters Mabel and it actually makes me cringe to hear it. To me, it's an ugly, unfeminine name with no redeeming features. I'm usually quite 'each to their own' about names, but this is the one name that grates horribly on me.

lisej · 18/09/2014 10:02

However, Maybelle is somehow OK, as long as you pronounce it like that.

APotNoodleandaTommy · 18/09/2014 14:24

I have a beautiful cat called Mabel and wanted to call our child Mabel if a girl, but wasn't allowed as the cat is still very much alive
It does sound awful at first but is a real grower

loislines · 18/09/2014 19:17

Our three year old is Mabel. We thought we'd shorten it to May, but she's always Mabes if anything. We love it and are struggling to find another girl's name we like as much!

AmysTiara · 18/09/2014 19:39

Its qute harsh sounding to me but i dont dislike it. Then again i wouldnt go as far as to say i actually like it. God ignore me im no use sorry.

myotherusernameisbetter · 18/09/2014 21:02

loislines I think Audra would fit the bill :)

thesnailandthewhale · 18/09/2014 22:11

Can't help but think of Auntie Mabel from Come Outside ... goes off wondering why she went everywhere in a spotty plane, "come on Pippin, lets get the plane out we need some milk" Confused
