When I was a teenager a friend of mine was seeing a lad who named his penis Basil! That's my first thought, then Fawlty Towers.

OrangeTart · 16/09/2014 14:04

As a massive Fawlty Towers fan, the first thing comes to mind is to shout "he Basil in the ratatouille?" Very loudly in a dodgy Spanish ish accent. So would my children.
I'm sorry but I couldn't take baby Basil seriously.

SirChenjin · 16/09/2014 14:11

He won't get bullied horribly because I'm sure you and the school won't allow it.

Whether or not the Fawlty Towers/Brush connotation will disappear over the next 20/30 years for a huge percentage of the population (including my teens - don't forget BB was re-done not that long ago for a newer audience), or whether it's really the nicest name out there......

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 16/09/2014 14:15

Sadly, yes. He'll spend his life listening to adults shrieking "Basseeel" in the style of Sybil Fawlty and wondering why.

Have just spent the weekend with some friends in their late 30's and early 40's. One family have a teenager with a girlfriend called Alice. All the guys spent the weekend mouthing "Alice, who the f is Alice" everytime the poor girls name was mentioned. Don't underestimate how tiresome a bunch of immature idiots will make your childs life.

Lunastarfish · 16/09/2014 16:48

You must pronounce it the American way of 'Bayzel' I love that! Brush and Fawlty towers will be ancient history when your basil hits school.

cherrybombxo · 16/09/2014 16:53

Brush and Fawlty towers will be ancient history when your basil hits school.

They're ancient history now and people still know about them, what will change in five years?

Ham69 · 16/09/2014 17:27

I'm a big Basil fan. It's my pet name for DS and also makes me think of an exceptionally fit boy/ man with that name when I was a student.

SirChenjin · 16/09/2014 17:42

Basil Brush isn't ancient history - my teens watched the recent version just a few years ago

squoosh · 16/09/2014 17:44

I've always loved Basil Brush and his natty tweeds.

BigfootFiles · 16/09/2014 17:47

First association with 'Baz' is Baz Luhrmann. I don't think he's a Basil, but he's a pretty cool Baz.

squoosh · 16/09/2014 17:50

Baz is like Gaz and Daz. The kind of guy wears a Hawaiian shirt and drinks Blue Wkd.

Branleuse · 16/09/2014 18:02

its lovely!

sillymillyb · 16/09/2014 18:07

I really love it.... But I automatically thought brush, then fawlty. So I'm on the fence with this one, sorry!

morethanpotatoprints · 16/09/2014 18:28

No, but he might be brushed aside Grin

Genesgirl · 16/09/2014 18:33

Though it is a lovely name. I did meet a Mum a few years ago who names her DS Basil (he was then around 14) and regretted it. He got a lot of stick/trouble but don't want to put you off. I worried about my DS1 name as it is also a popular dogs name :-) but it has been okay. I am sure you will make the right decision and most importantly enjoy your pregnancy and this special time x

onelastfling · 16/09/2014 18:36

It sounds a bit pretentious. Sorry.

TheFairyCaravan · 16/09/2014 18:39

I'm not sure, tbh.

I do like it, one of my hamsters was called Basil!

onelastfling · 16/09/2014 18:40

Somebody said to me that a test of whether a name is any good is to
go to your back door, open it and call the name (Basil!!!!) a few times, in a really loud voice.

If it sounds ridiculous and you feel uncomfortable when you are shouting it, (after all, you will be calling the name a LOT if you choose it) then don't use it. Choose something else.

CoreyTrevorLahey · 16/09/2014 18:48

I know a Basil in his 50s. He is a damn cool guy and definitely not posh or Eton material.

He's a 40 a day B&H man! Grin

SirChenjin · 16/09/2014 19:07

A 40 a day B&H man? You're not painting a good picture there Grin

Frikadellen · 16/09/2014 19:09

i LOVE the name Basil wanted it for ds but dh wouldn;t agree

I think it is a fab name & even though I am old enough to remember Faulty towers I still think go for it

Sophronia · 16/09/2014 22:53

I like Basil! I think it's actually quite handsome in a way.

hippy1952 · 17/09/2014 09:11

My grandson who is 16 is called Basil as is his dad and granddad. None of his friends tease him and although he lets his friends and his 2 sisters call him Baz he insists us adults call him Basil. I think it's a lovely name.

TheFroglet · 17/09/2014 11:02

Thankyou all for your feedback, I am awaiting a surprise any day now, and still really loving the name so thats good! Its all about the person 'owning' their name really isnt it. I am sure (if it is a he) he will be a gorgeous one (well i would have to say that wouldnt i!) or as husband says it will prob make him a real tough cookie!! ;)

Not keen on it personally. I instantly think of the character Basil Faulty or the puppet Basil Brush (who I find the most irritating puppet going!)
