I am French DH is English, we already have an Amelie, expecting another DD. Would be interested to know do you think Amandine and Amelie go well as a sibling set or too similar? Thanks

I really like it.

SwedishEdith · 15/09/2014 19:24

I love Amandine but I think it might be just a bit similar. There are sooooo many gorgeous French names for girls though that you've got a lovely job thinking about them all. Do you live in France or the UK?

AlfAlf · 15/09/2014 19:25

Too similar I think.
What other names are you thinking of?
I like Eloise, Genevieve, Isabelle..

AlfAlf · 15/09/2014 19:34

Yes, you do have a lovely job finding a name :)

Actually, I prefer Elise to Eloise. Also Adele, or dd1 has a friend called Mathilde which is lovely (wish I could remember how to do accents on iPad!)

Rapha · 15/09/2014 19:36

We live in the UK. I have not really got many other ideas this time. I still love the name Amelie but am looking for something abit less popular this time. I love Ines which is popular in France but not here but DH is not keen.

Ines is lovely but pronunciation might vary depending on where you live in the UK Grin
Sylvie is popular in the UK
I love Severine, Fabienne and Celeste but I suspect they're all old lady names in France

I love the name Amelie! Beautiful name and my all time favourite film Smile

For a French-English child I think it needs to be something that most people in both countries can pronounce without it sounding ugly or too different. Some names just don't work in both languages and the ones that work seem to be the classic ones, although they might be too popular for you?

These are the girls' names I like that work well in English and French:
Margot (my French SIL's name)
Ella
Emma (my name Wink)
Eva
Sophie (but not if I already had an Amelie)

My French husband likes Louise, which is my middle name, but I don't like it so much - maybe because it's common for my generation (born in the 80s).

Lunastarfish · 17/09/2014 21:47

Amandine is a beautiful name and goes well with Amelie but the 'man' will be stressed in English. The french pronounciation is not natural to English speakers. It will also almost certainly be shortened to Amanda, Mandy or Dina when she starts school.

Ines is also beautiful and not very common here.

How about Juliette or Clarice?

Sapat · 17/09/2014 21:54

Same situation as you, we wanted names that worked in both languages with the same spelling, but only after our DD (Sophie) we got all boys (so hard!).

Nice girls' names:
Anabelle
Anna
Louise
Juliette
Florence
Charlotte
Madeleine
Elise
Emma
Léa
Clarisse
Mathilde

Sapat · 17/09/2014 21:57

Isn't Ines Spanish for Agnès?
I like Eloise too, though I tried to think names without accents (a bit tricky for spelling. My brother always has problems with flights etc).

CecyHall · 17/09/2014 21:57

I'd probably first think that you really liked the film (Amelie's mum being Amandine) but aside from that I'd just think nice French names!

thatsn0tmyname · 17/09/2014 22:00

Leucine, Anyes?

HootOnTheBeach · 17/09/2014 22:06

I think the English pronunciation will butcher a beautiful name and that you shouldn't do that to your baby. (spoken as someone whose name is frequently pronounced horridly to the point where I just 'choose' to go by a different name)

bouncingbelle · 18/09/2014 01:31

Both names are lovely but could both be shortened to amy/ami surely.

What about
Sylvie
Celeste
Eva
Fleur
Florence

TheNewStatesman · 18/09/2014 01:39

Cecile?

turdfairynomore · 18/09/2014 02:07

Delphine? Renée? (Though I do love Ines too-much more than amandine I think)

Alicarmen · 18/09/2014 18:09

Thanks for the feedback , I have ruled out Amandine , you are right the pronounciation for non french speakers is an issue. Of the other suggestions I like In order Elise, Charlotte, Margot and Ella. Thank you.

pilates · 18/09/2014 18:22

How about Sophia?
Elise is lovely.

sophielouise · 18/09/2014 22:18

Hardly ever post on here, currently lurking for ideas myself! Anyway I just love the name Elodie and had to add it to the suggestions.

AlfAlf · 19/09/2014 00:07

Amelie and Elise sound so beautiful together, and are also distinctly French but accessible to the English tongue.

sophie Elodie is gorgeous, but I think too similar sounding to Amelie for siblings, you should go for it though, so pretty :)

turdfairynomore · 19/09/2014 16:53

I know an Elise-she often gets "misread" as Elsie!

Alicarmen · 19/09/2014 19:31

Love Elise , just need to convince Dh !

Nocturne123 · 19/09/2014 19:41

Love amandine ! I also love clementine , I knew a french girl with this name and thought it was beautiful
