memorable names (and forgettable ones)

...just wondering.

What are the names of people in passing that you've remembered?

I remember a Yolanda from school. She wasn't bonkers so its definitely her name that makes me remember her.

I also remember the names if any Lauras, Darrens, Beatrices, Tobys but bizarrely always seem to forget Emilys even though that's one of my favourite names!

Celeste. Never come across another one (probably different if I lived in France!)

Fleur.

Corinna.

Rosalind.

fcukip · 15/09/2014 17:21

I've never met a Celeste!

Athena and Antigone. Both were at my school.

Quite out there names for girls born in the late 80's where I live!

Kantha · 15/09/2014 18:22

I worked with an Asher. He was a dreadful womaniser (not with me I hasten to add!) but it was the only time I had come across his name and with his surname it suited his rather decadent lifestyle.

I also knew a Mungo and a Dougal (Doo-gal) at university. Both posh boys in case that isn't obvious.

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 15/09/2014 18:27

Ember was the most "out there" name in my school year. We had tons and tons of Jennifers, Gemmas and Leanne/Liannes too.

MadameJosephine · 15/09/2014 18:31

I went to school with a girl named Cordelia, never met another one since

Pantstootight · 15/09/2014 19:47

I used to work on cruise ships, with alot of people from the Phillipines...they always had some strange names ,

Beethoven
Ulisse
Areil

Girlie
Gay

Used to find it strange calling somoe by the name Girlie...

Ifem · 15/09/2014 19:49

I went to uni with a guy called Gilbert. He was very posh, super rich ('dad owned a Caribbean island' type of rich) and incredibly cool....all the girls fancied him. Never met another one.

babyfedleaning · 15/09/2014 20:09

Beulah (f) , Gailey (f) and Teilo (male)

babyfedleaning · 15/09/2014 20:10

Madame Josephine did she have a double-barrelled surname as I knew one too?

itsnothingoriginal · 15/09/2014 21:37

Clement
Brychan
Merlin

Pearl
Ribenia

...probably the most memorable names I have come across IRL! I think it's great to have a memorable name hence I gave my DC fairly unusual names (hopefully also ones that people remember because they are nice, not just unusual Grin)..

Love Beethoven - now that's a name to live up to!!

Alisvolatpropiis · 15/09/2014 22:18

I also went to school with a Portia.

This is why I think names like Persephone are totally usable. I want to state school with a very mixed catchment and none of the owners of the names I've mentioned had any issue.

evamummy · 15/09/2014 22:28

I can definitely remember the people with less common names (e.g. Arabella, Darius) much better than the dozens of Clares and Andys or Mikes.

Common sense really - names are meant to identify us. And the more unique the name is, the better a job it does at identifying us!

JimmyCorkhill · 15/09/2014 22:39

I can even remember the surnames of the names I mentioned upthread!!

I knew a Gay too, her brother is called Ray Grin

I taught a Sultana.

elQuintoConyo · 15/09/2014 22:54

I taught an Italian Monica Sixfingers (Seidite, excuse bad spelling).

I have known:

Atlanta
Lamorna
Minette
Geraldine
Camilla
Athena
Hermes

All girls born '72-'76.

I don't know anyone with an unusual name these days, although I'm abroad so hear such gems as Veronica, Angelita and Sheila (pron shay-la) on a daily basis.

steppemum · 15/09/2014 23:03

I know a Yolanda!

I saw a girl in the paper called Peony. I thought it was lovely.

DrCarolineTodd · 17/09/2014 00:09

I knew a Raphaella and thought that was such a cool name.

I love Celeste but have never met one.

I've also known people called:
Serena
Portia
Candice (pronounced CANDiss, not CandEECE)
Jaya (rhymes with flyer)
Eliana
Sappho
Zacia (pronounced Zay-sha)

And a bloke called Pontus.

But the coolest name I ever heard was Atarah (A-Tara). Total name envy.

JellySnakesLadderedTights · 17/09/2014 11:54

I have come across people called: -

Merlin
Magic
Lovely
Toffee

These sound more suited to pets than people, to me, tbh

Wishfulmakeupping · 17/09/2014 12:43

I worked with a teenager a couple of years back and her name was Peggy. Was not what I expected her to be called but it worked! Good name

grufallosfriend · 17/09/2014 13:22

The most memorable names I've come across are those that aren't overused, so names like Thaddeus, Linus and Fabian or Alina, Connie and Aurelia.

In fact, more people should have 'memorable' names!!

PomPomPingPong · 17/09/2014 15:58

Olric
Hortensia

Frikadellen · 17/09/2014 18:27

I worked with a Tiare once.. Never met another .. She was incredibility lazy though.. So doesn't have the best of connections

OublietteBravo · 17/09/2014 18:49

I went to school with girls called Oriel and Nonie (both born mid-70s). I've never come across anyone else with either name.

My sister taught a little boy called Atilla.

DD (10) has had children called Elvis, Joachim, Everton, Santiago, Shelby, Cleona and Lily-Boo in her class at various points in time.

I also know small girls called Olympia and Ixia.

Alisvolatpropiis · 17/09/2014 19:01

I went to school with an Oriel too Bravo! The one I knew was late 80's born like me

DrCarolineTodd · 17/09/2014 22:11

I went to school with an Oriel and a friend works with another one.
