I really like boys names starting with john (John-Paul, John-Joseph,etc). All my work colleagues hated them when we were talking about it last week Sad. What does everyone else think?

No. Stop it. Your colleagues are right.

He'll sound like a pope or one of the Waltons.

I don't like hyphenated names for boys or girls tbh. I think they look indecisive and strangely greedy, like you had to use extra names because a first and a middle name just weren't enough.

However, that's probably deeply unreasonable of me.

Only1scoop · 14/09/2014 20:11

Just no

LastingLight · 14/09/2014 20:11

Sorry but it sounds as if the parents just couldn't make up their minds.

Siennasun · 14/09/2014 20:14

Well that's pretty decisive. Sad
I do agree with the pope comment - not what I want for future DS

Around where I live hyphenated boys' names are reakly only used by the Irish traveller community. I don't mind these names TBH. At least they're not Jake/Oliver/Charlie etc etc etc.. How's about using two names but no hyphen. E.g., Brett Easton Ellis.

Sophronia · 14/09/2014 22:40

I like them! I think I prefer them without the hyphen though. John Paul and John Joseph are nice.

I also like John Luke, John Andrew, John Charles, John David, John Francis, John Henry, John James, John Jacob, John Michael and John Peter.

OutragedFromLeeds · 15/09/2014 01:01

Hyphenated names are ok, but not starting with John. It's so boring it sounds like you had to use John, but actually wanted the other name so compromised with John Joseph or whatever. If you like John plus a bit extra just use Jonathan, which is perfectly nice.

squoosh · 15/09/2014 01:19

There are tons of Irish men born around 1978/79 called John-Paul. And John-Joe is a real farmer's name.

Personally I'm not a fan of hyphenated names.

squeak2392 · 15/09/2014 02:46

I like them, but they can sound very religious. One of my favourite names is Anne-Catherine, and I've always loved Mary-Jane. Not boys names but... hey ho.

BlueChampagne · 15/09/2014 13:03

Very French

MadameJosephine · 15/09/2014 18:34

I love Jean-Luc (as in Picard) but I think you can only really get away with it if you are French

SwedishEdith · 15/09/2014 19:27

I'd love to have had a boyfriend called Jean -Baptiste.

mymatemax · 15/09/2014 19:30

don't-do-it
More common in the Irish traveller community

There is a John-James at ds2's school he is known as JJ

Camsie30 · 15/09/2014 19:33

I like BillyElliot. One word. 2 capitals.

Siennasun · 15/09/2014 20:48

Yay not everyone hates them Smile
I've got a couple of friends called John Joseph (JohnJoe), both Irish, though not travellers. I also know a John-Paul through work who is really fit nice, which is what gave me the idea, I think.
DS 1 has the only boys name that DH and I both liked so really struggling to think of potential boys names....

Where I am it is often done to disambiguate a child from the other John Smiths in the class/family/community.

I would deffo go without the hyphen to avoid banjo-twanging appalachian connotations though Grin

vestandknickers · 15/09/2014 21:03

Is disambiguate a word?

Siennasun · 15/09/2014 21:11

Without the hyphen would John Paul not just get called John with Paul being a middle name?

Also we have a very Irish surname (though I've never even been to Ireland and nor has DH). Would that make any double name even more travellery?
Is it that bad? I quite like traveller names - Tyson Fury Grin

Differentiate may have been a better choice but yes, disambiguate is a perfectly good word and is in the OED Confused

vestandknickers · 15/09/2014 21:40

Excellent! I love a new word Smile

concernedaboutheboy · 15/09/2014 21:49

Me too. I have to rein myself in in RL otherwise I find myself getting blank looks when I try out my new terms :) :) I'm all for plain English but language is so fascinating.

Szeli · 17/09/2014 02:56

if you spell john jean its much more palletable

Lunastarfish · 17/09/2014 21:56

John-Paul is the only hyphenated boys name that works. But beware, I know 2 and they are both known as JP.

sweetkitty · 17/09/2014 21:59

As the owner of a hyphenated name no don't do it.

Loads of reasons why, getting called a Walton, computers not recognising the hyphen , getting teased a bit.
