We aren't going to find out the sex so we need 2 names. Dh is terribly picky and its been a nightmare trying to get him to agree on anything. The only boys name we both like is Robin. Would it be shortened to Rob because we'd hate that so much. In fact its upset me really hormones as I didn't even think of it until he brought it up.

Also we love the name Lorelei for a girl. The trouble is we already have a Lola and I don't want it to sound silly!

I don't think Lorelai and Lola work together, sorry.

Robin might get shortened to Rob but not the inevitable way Robert would.

BlueChampagne · 10/09/2014 16:10

Congratulations! However, I agree Lola and Lorelei would be too much. But Robin could be used for a boy or a girl!

Sophronia · 10/09/2014 16:38

I don't think Lorelei and Lola work.

Robin might get shortened to Rob, especially by friends at school when he's a teenager etc.

Pantstootight · 10/09/2014 16:56

I know that you said Robin for a boy...
My DD is called Robin. I love it as a girls name!!
She is the only Robin in her school and no one has ever shortened her name, also, family members and friends have always called her Robin.
I wouldn't mind if people did use a nn but no one ever has...just doesn't happen!
Apart from the usual jokes about Batman and Robin Hood ( which she's heard a million times) she loves her name.

Having said that maybe if Robin were to be used as a boys name I can see that Rob could be used,...
However famous Robins such as Gibb and Williams weren't known as Robs, were they?

florascotia · 10/09/2014 17:03

Robin is a nice name. Robin Hood = pretty cool.
If you don't like Rob, could you perhaps encourage a nickname that you do prefer? There is Rab/Rabbie (Scottish) for example, or Bob or Bobby, or (more modern-sounding) Ro.
Also, many people 'grow' nicknames that are nothing to do with their real names, but reflect a positive characteristic. And, maybe not ideal, but I could see a teenage Robin being nicknamed 'Hoody' and rather liking it

Agree with other posters that Lola and Lorelei are a bit too close. What about Laura or Lauren or Laurel? Personally, I don't like Lauren but that's just me. I like the other two. If you like 'L' names, what about Lark, Laetitia, Larisa, Lavender, Leonora etc etc... Or, since Lorelei is a nature-spirit, perhaps think about some of those names? Or, if you chose Lola because it's short for Maria de Dolores, then other 'Maria' names...

I think he would be on board for using Robin for a girl. I love it for both. I'm just going to have to veto Lorelei as it is too much. I think if it is a boy and we use Robin I'll have to be firm and correct people straight away if they shorten to Rob. I quite like bobbin as a cutesy nickname and then Bob for when older. I'll have a think about other L names. I love Lavender especially but have a feeling he'll say no. Its not his turn though Wink

The only thing is that I wish we'd spelt Robin with a 'y', as Robyn, so as not to confuse gender , when filing in forms etc..
Still love it though!

manicinsomniac · 10/09/2014 20:01

Robin is lovely.

I teach a boy Robin and a girl Robyn and I've never heard either of them being shortened. Use it for either.

Lorelai is pretty but agree you can't use it with Lola.

looki · 10/09/2014 21:30

Robin may get shortened or may not. I don't think there is anything you can do about it. I certainly don't think you should nickname your child yourself in order avoid another nickname unless you like the nickname. I also don't get the whole nickname thing - not everybody's name is shortened, biut if it is shortened by school friends etc there isn't much you can do about it. It probably won't happen until he is a teenager anyway and by then he will have his own voice.

I don't like Loralei and definitely not with Lola!

squeak2392 · 10/09/2014 22:41

Sorry, I think Lola could easily be a nn for Lorelei :/

Robin probably would get Rob at some point, but I don't think it would be a common thing. It's a good name :)
