Does this name sound too 'sing-song'?

We have literally trawled through hundreds of name websites and are struggling to agree on a name for our son due in a few weeks. We both like James but think its a bit over-used (don't want to use the word 'common'!). We also like Harry but I'm worried it sounds a bit sing-song with our surname which is Kelly...any thoughts on this? I'm trying to think of how it will sound in a playground/ school bearing in mind how cruel kids can be....

Can't help thinking of Henry Kelly of Going For Gold 'fame'. James sounds nicer I think.

Think both names are overwhelmingly popular. Prefer Harry, don't think Harry Kelly is too sing-song, but James Kelly sounds better than Harry Kelly.

We have a James, it's a vastly over-used middle name but I don't know a single James in RL (OH has a big, mainly male family too)

What about Jamie? I know a Jamie Kelly, lovely kid!

Harrison Kelly sounds good?

James Kelly sounds better. Harry is the more popular by far. DS does baby swimming in a class of 6. Out of 4 boys, two are Harry, one is Henry. It's very confusing. In my mind I confess they are "Ginger Harry" and "Little Harry".

I work with a man called Harry Kelly, I think it's a nice name!

miffybun73 · 11/09/2014 12:36

I think James Kelly is lovely.

Not sure about the combination of Harry and Kelly. When I say Harry Kelly, I think of the annoying Lelli Kelly advert.

James is my chosen name if I have a DS at some point so I'm biased. I would say though, my DP has said that we're not choosing a two syllable first name for that exact "sing song" reason - he has a two syllable surname and he says it sounds weird! Confused

Henry kelly

Thanks all for the comments.

As I mentioned, Harry is way less common here and our goal was to find a name that he won't have to share with 4 others in his class. While I like James, its just not unique enough and he will end up being called James K. I personally like Jamie but DH won't go for it...

Btw we were never going to call him Henry (or Matthew either for the same reason - too many catchphrases associated with both!)

The annoying thing is we have a beautiful girls name picked from about 8 weeks and have never changed our minds on it. It fits the bill exactly, not common but a name that you'd have heard of and that will not need constant spelling/ pronunciation for the rest of her life. Hopefully we'll get to use it some day!

I know this is not at all relevant to the thread, and I apologise to the OP for this, but the Japanese ritual suicide is hara-kiri, not hari-kari.

I know a James Kelly! He's in his twenties and a pretty cool guy. Go for it!
