Amélie or Rosalie?

Mh0296 · 06/09/2014 22:06

Which name do you prefer?
I love Amélie, but there seems to be lots of little Amelies and Amelias running around at the moment.
Rosalie I have a love-hate relationship with. Most of the time I think it's beautiful, but sometimes it strikes me as made-up (which I know it isn't!) and a bit of a mouthful....
Any opinions?

Rosalie definitely Smile I love the name Rose so its an obvious choice for me. I'm never put off if a name is quite popular so even though Amelie is quite popular at the moment I still like it. Rosalie just seems more elegant to me Grin

KERALA1 · 06/09/2014 23:20

Millions of Amelie's it will date badly

ralinax294 · 06/09/2014 23:24

Both are pretty but I much prefer Amelie even though it's so popular.

Happy36 · 06/09/2014 23:27

I love Rosalie and you can shorten it to Rosa, Rossy, or Rosie/Rosey if all 3 syllables feel too long to use sometimes. They´re all nice little nicknames. (I think it´s an important factor - other kids or adults will always shorten a name. I love Victoria, for example, but ruled it out as I dislike "Vicky").

Amélie is a great name but in my personal opinion SOOOOO popular!

catsofa · 06/09/2014 23:30

I love Rosalie, it is very near the top of my own list. Rosie for short, Roz a bit more grown up sounding for later.

I would think Amelie would get called Emily all the time, don't like it nearly as much.

mathanxiety · 06/09/2014 23:36

I prefer Rosalie.
Amelie seems very insipid to me, and neither Emily nor Amelia.

I also love Rosalind, Rosamund, Rosaleen, and Rosina fwiw. Also the Irish name Roisin.

Sophronia · 07/09/2014 02:30

I prefer Amelie.

dolallymum · 07/09/2014 03:20

Rosalie is a lovely name.

Hurr1cane · 07/09/2014 12:21

I love Amelie!

Guin1 · 07/09/2014 15:03

Another vote for Rosalie. Plus I know it would annoy me that the accent would always get left of the e in Amelie - like I've just done.

pacificrose · 07/09/2014 18:38

I'm a fourth-generation Rosalie, and have been Rosie since birth (never needed a more "grown up" nickname) - I might be a bit biased, but I think it's a timeless name :)

juneau · 07/09/2014 18:44

Not Amelie! I know so many Amelies that its becoming ridiculous.

makesomenoise · 07/09/2014 20:45

Ooh I'm not sure. I like both. I was very keen on Rosalie for our DD2 - as well as many other Rose- names - but ended up choosing a 'Rose' name as I wasn't keen on the 'Roz' sound of it.

Mh0296 · 07/09/2014 21:08

I'm glad it's not just me that remarks on the number of Amélie/Amelias around at the moment. I understand why as it's a beautiful name but wouldn't want any future DC to be known as Amélie lastname all the time!
pacificrose I've never met/heard of a real life Rosalie over here, but had a colleague called Rosalie when I was working in France (beautiful name btw!) Do people manage to pronounce it/ spell it okay over here? I'm going to guess that thanks to twilight more people have heard of it?

pacificrose · 08/09/2014 14:18

Mh0296 people do ok with the pronunciation - sometimes it comes out roz-a-lee, but most of the time it's rose-a-lee. I actually hated that it was in Twilight, only because Stephenie Meyer described it as an old-fashioned name, the kind grandparents would have!

Agree I know way more Amelie/Amelias than I do Sophie/Sophia and I know at least 9 of them.
I think one of my dcd had 4 Amelies in his class, we live on the same street as another!!!!

Bonsoir · 08/09/2014 14:35

Rosalie.

Bluebees · 08/09/2014 14:41

Rosalie, it's beautiful Smile

ComeHeather · 08/09/2014 14:44

Rosalie, for sure.

Rosanna also lovely.

Hundreds of Emily/ Emilia/Amelia/Amelie girls here. Every girl except one has this variety of name in DS class...he's 7. It's not much different in the younger classes either.

JellyBeansHaveNoAgeLimit · 08/09/2014 15:17

Rosalie is the name I have chosen for a girl, so nice to know someone else is considering it too! I love the name Rose but think its lovely to have a longer name you can shorten Smile

I was worried about the twilight connotations but as many MN pointed out, that franchise will be long forgotten in a few years!

fruitpastille · 08/09/2014 15:47

I love Rosa myself but couldn't convince dh!

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 09/09/2014 19:23

Rosalie. It's beautiful. She could you Rose, Rosie or Rosa. Don't like Amelie aside from it being too popular it sounds like people are mispronouncing Emily when they say it

Raeray · 09/09/2014 19:29

Another vote for Rosalie from me. Although Amelie is lovely too (popular for a reason I guess).
Another name that sprung to mind with the ones you like was Coralie, but I don't know if that's one you like? But thought I'd mention it just in case!
