We are expecting our DS in 6 weeks.
DH loves the name Cillian but I'm not sure.
I know a baby who died at a few months old & he was called Cillian. I'm not close friends with his Mum, we were on the same month board in another parenting website. We are friends in FB though.
Wod you use this name? It just doesn't sit right with me.

It would put me off tbh.
I don't know why, a name is a name, but like you, it wouldn't sit right.

picnicbasketcase · 03/09/2014 17:07

I don't think I would, no. I can't quite articulate why, but it wouldn't feel right. Seeing the name on fb would probably be incredibly painful for your friend, even if the two of you aren't that close.

Fissawissa · 03/09/2014 17:12

My thoughts exactly - as soon as he mentioned the name I thought of her little baby.

No I couldn't especially if you're friends with her on Facebook. If it were a popular name then it would be fine as it's just an acquaintance but it's too unusual..

Fissawissa · 03/09/2014 17:28

Thanks everyone - good to hear your opinions.

Sorry was meant to say my main reason for not wanting to use this name would be out of respect for the lady & her little baby Thanks

I'm in a similar situation with the name Reuben, I don't know the lady that lost her son but a very good friend of mine does & regularly posts about the charity set up in his name and it doesn't feel right to use it, unfortunately it's DPs favourite at the moment.

Theonlyoneiknow · 03/09/2014 21:23

If you are friends on Facebook then It would be hard for her seeing the name on your posts.

Have you thought about maybe Keir, Cair, Cael, Coll, Kieran?

EugenesAxe · 03/09/2014 21:27

Out of respect for your friend - even if just a FB acquaintance - no I wouldn't.

KittenOverlord has posted almost exactly what I thought on the subject.

Fissawissa · 03/09/2014 21:33

Thanks for the replies.
It's not actually a name I would have chosen anyway so I'm sure DH can think of another! (Only problem is the only other name he likes is Napoleon ??)

No I wouldn't it'd make me think of that other poor baby and I'd feel awkward with the mum

Valsoldknickers · 03/09/2014 21:44

It happened to me 3 months after my DS died. I have to say that it felt like a knife being twisted at first. I don't see the mother or child really even though we live in the same area. My DH knows her well. I don't really know how I still feel about it to be honest. A mutual friend phoned me up to tell me as she didn't want me to hear it if I bumped into anyone on the street. This is my experience, maybe Cillian's DM might feel differently.

Fissawissa · 03/09/2014 22:53

Sorry to hear of your loss valsoldknickers - your post has cemented my thoughts.

Is it pronounced Sillian or Killian? If the latter, why not spell it that way?

Fissawissa · 03/09/2014 23:07

Pronounced Killian

Leeds2 · 03/09/2014 23:13

I wouldn't use it, no.

Sophronia · 04/09/2014 00:54

I wouldn't use it.

babyblabber · 04/09/2014 08:21

what about Cian as an alternative?

squoosh · 04/09/2014 13:01

I definitely wouldn't use it.

It doesn't really matter that you aren't close friends, the idea of the hurt that might cause someone when there are lots of other names I could use would put me right off it.

Fissawissa · 04/09/2014 19:21

Ok thank you Thanks
I'm not going to use it, was just looking for opinions - it's just a pity as it's probably the only boys name we can somewhat agree on!

birdofthenorth · 04/09/2014 21:16

No I wouldn't. It was cause her pain unnecessarily. There are hundreds of other gorgeous names out there.
