Hi,
I have an Oliver and an Elsie and am due any day with another girlie.

Our names list was:
Martha
Mathilda
Maggie
Beatrice

I have always loved Maggie but it seems to get a really strong reaction (not a good one either!) and loads of people absolutely hate it.

What's the general consensus on Maggie?

Whilst I like the other names I find Bea a bit predictable, Martha a little hard and I love Matilda but can't stand the nn Tilly and have no control over what they will end up being called at school.

To be fair Elsie got a massive marmite reaction when she was born so I'm not adverse to a marmite name but is Maggie a hard name?

Thanks in advance!!!

catsofa that's so immature - avoiding a small girl because she has the same first name as a politician approximately 90 years older than her Confused. i think you'd be doing the OP a favour to avoid her.

Maggie Beatrice

Jumblebee · 02/09/2014 21:39

Maggie Elizabeth, because my Elizabeth was supposed to be a Maggie!

OP you have excellent taste in names, Oliver is second choice if I ever have a baby boy (it's DP's first choice) Grin

Canshopwillshop · 02/09/2014 21:43

I love Maggie. I would call her Margaret on birth certificate though (my mum's name and DD's middle name).

pilates · 02/09/2014 21:57

I like Mathilda best, dislike Maggie.

birdofthenorth · 02/09/2014 22:07

Magda?

BeattieBow · 02/09/2014 22:12

Maggie Thatcher to me. I hate it for that reason.

I love Beatrice as a name, and also Mathilda.

(I also really like Elsie too - I'm not having any more children, so we just got a kitten and called her Elsie). if I did have an accidental daughter, she'd be called Beatrice.

TheOriginalSteamingNit · 02/09/2014 22:16

Makes me think of thatcher, and also 'not a name' unless short for Margaret, which also makes me think of thatcher.

TaurielTest · 02/09/2014 22:20

Maggie! Love it - makes me think of this Maggie, who is a great character (though her real name is Perla...)

My daughter is called Maggie and we love it. I don't think of Simpson or Thatcher- she happens to have the same name as a famous Dame!

RedNosedClone · 02/09/2014 22:33

I think Maggie is great name, strong and feisty. I would however put Margaret or Margot on the birth certificate (preferably Margot).

Matilda is another strong name and can be shortened to Mattie, which is less cutesie than Tilly and close to Maggie...

KERALA1 · 02/09/2014 22:43

Love it. Matilda over done loads of them

catsofa · 02/09/2014 22:52

PenguinsIsSleepDeprived probably because I spent so many hours of my life in the 1980s shouting "Maggie Maggie Maggie, out out out!" as she destroyed one public service and one working class community after another.

Margaret does not have the same association (I think almost everyone I know has an Aunt Margaret somewhere Smile), it's just Maggie because it was a more distinctive nickname - I've never known anyone else with the name.

I would be shocked if anyone of my generation didn't know who Maggie was, and she's not long died so I would assume a child born around now had been named after her.

I really like all the other names in the OP though, and I love Margot.

minniemaus · 03/09/2014 08:49

I find Maggie harsh sounding as well as being too close to Maggi (instant soups).

There are far prettier names imo.

alliemarg · 03/09/2014 09:33

I personally love Maggie :-)

sonniebonnie · 03/09/2014 14:12

I find Margaret and Maggie very unfeminine. I love Marianne though and quite like Matilda.

Agree about the Maggi association, another reason to avoid it.

KERALA1 · 03/09/2014 19:27

I think that's why I like it. Antidote to the girlie weak names like poppy, sophie Amelia etc. it's strong.

RabbitSaysWoof · 03/09/2014 19:30

My friend has a Maggie shes beautiful, I love the name.

Bunbaker · 03/09/2014 19:32

I quite like it, but I would make the mistake of assuming it was short for Margaret.

Bumpngrind85 · 03/09/2014 19:43

How about Margot? A little softer sounding ... Your other children's names are beautiful.

Bumpngrind85 · 03/09/2014 19:45

Also, you could name her Magda on birth certificate - and maggie for nn

Bettyhen · 03/09/2014 19:46

Think Maggie is a great name, my DD's middle name is Elsie so think you've got good taste anyway!
I know someone with a Martha nn Marti which is cute.
What about Annie?

AlpacaYourThings · 03/09/2014 19:49

I really LOVE LOVE LOVE like Maggie.

It's a great name.

Slongette · 03/09/2014 19:51

My friend has a Margot who she calls Maggie - I like it.

tartiflette · 03/09/2014 19:53

My Maggie is Maggie Grace Smile

EverythingCounts · 03/09/2014 20:40

Maggie Grace or Maggie Elizabeth. Both lovely combinations.
