Would this put you off this name?

DH and I only really agree on the name Anna for our upcoming DD, but we have 2 concerns:

1). Not really a concern but feeds into number 2 - do you think this name will be crazily popular for girls born this year due to Frozen etc?

  1. my main concern - if there's more than one in her class, she will be known by Anna L (first letter of surname). Am I ridiculous to think that this might look like a bit rude and be prime for teasing? Or am I really overthinking this? DH thinks I'm being ridiculous but you never know!

DD3 was almost called Ana - with an L surname, we quickly discarded it Shock

I think you can get away with having it spelt Anna.

janie2 · 31/08/2014 20:56

I think if you love the name then it's popular enough to just be a nice name rather than obviously from a film.

Also, my daughter would very strongly tell you that the character is actually Ona in the way it is pronounced rather than Anna, does that help?

Congratulations!

janie2 · 31/08/2014 20:58

p.s its popular but not overly where I am in central Scotland!

picnicbasketcase · 31/08/2014 21:01

I was going to ask that too - are people still going to pronounce Anna as it's spelled or whether the Frozen connection would result in lots of 'Ah-na' pronunciation.

LatteLoverLovesLattes · 31/08/2014 21:02

Yes, I think it will be one of the top names of this year and I wouldn't use it with your surname. No matter how you spell it, saying it outloud... you just can't.

Have you tried a suggestions thread?

Michonne · 31/08/2014 22:16

I love it too but discounted it due to having a surname beginning with L!

Kim82 · 31/08/2014 22:41

I know of an Anna whose surname begins with L. To be honest I've never noticed the anal thing and I have a mind that's constantly in the gutter! If you like it then go for it. Anna is lovely, it was on our shortlist for our 6 week old dd.

jazzyjenbo · 31/08/2014 22:46

How about calling her arna? Like the pronunciation in frozen?
Meaning 'mountain of strength' in hebrew

callipygian00 · 31/08/2014 23:16

How about Anya? Anna's lovely but not with an L name!

BikeRunSki · 31/08/2014 23:20

Annabel, nn Annie or Anna?

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 31/08/2014 23:28

It took me a while to get what the problem was with Ana L. I can be slow on the uptake though. Anna/Ana is a beautiful name but I wouldn't put it with a surname that begins with L. Oh yeah absolutely there's a good chance no-one'll pick up on but there's also a better chance that people will, and I'm sure you'd hate to be feeling guilty that is being teased for the name you have given her.
How about Elsa.

Pebbles0934 · 01/09/2014 04:33

I have a friend call
Anna L... And I have never ever thought about it! Went the whole way through secondary school without anyone picking up on it either! (Maybe you are over thinking it?) but I suppose now it's in your mind....

I can't imagine Anna being in the top 10 but could be wrong.

Annabel
Annabeth

You are over thinking it. Anna is a lovely classic name. Anna L neither looks like, nor sounds like, the word you are concerned about. It would never have crossed my mind without you drawing attention to it.

pilates · 01/09/2014 08:41

No, you are overthinking.

It's a lovely name.

BooToYouMrsMagoo · 01/09/2014 16:00

Thank you everyone, some mixed opinions there! Think I've convinced myself it will be ok. DH and I literally can't agree on anything else as we have quite different tastes (I like 'simple', strong names like Mary and Elizabeth - he likes 'sweet' names like Emily and Poppy. I know they don't sound too different but I'm just not keen on his suggestions. Anna remains the front runner!

A bit late, but I think it's fine. I wouldn't even have noticed if you hadn't pointed it out. Young kids certainly won't, and if they do later in life, then maybe she could go by Anna Middlename instead.

Alternatively - Annelise? I don't think the -lise is an issue with an L surname so long as it's not l-s - Lester or something.

nooka · 08/09/2014 06:30

It's really only an issue if your dd shares her name with other girls in her class (and then probably only at secondary school), and thus becomes Anna L. I think that it's relatively unlikely that Anna will boom, because it's not an unusual name so won't be new to most potential parents watching Frozen. However that also means that there is a chance of other Annas regardless, although looking here, Anna seems to be on the decline, which is a good sign.

My dd has a relatively popular name, and having been Firstname Initialofsurname for a couple of years decided to use her full name at school instead (it's the short form of her name that's popular).

So I think to be safe a long form of Anna might be the best bet for you, to be used only if she should happen to have other Annas in her class.

Montsti · 08/09/2014 17:29

I knew a few Annas before frozen and it's certainly not uncommon, however it's a classic and won't be faddy despite the Frozen connection.

I'm about to have my 3rd child (dd2) and calling her Annabel - I prefer slightly longer names you can shorten and am sure she'll become Anna at some stage.
