If you have a Nell...

... Does she get called Nelly? 34 weeks with DC2 and struggling to agree a name with DH (DC1 a boy). I love Nell (would be Eleanor on the birth certificate) but DH has an irrational hatred of Nelly. If we introduce her as Nell and call her Nell ourselves, what are the chances she will become a Nelly (while a baby/toddler at least - I fully accept it is out of our hands once she gets to school age but hoping DH will be reconciled with it by then!)?

If you are going to use Nell then I think you are going to get people calling her Nelly, people seem to like adding 'y' on the end of names whenever they can, especially for babies - sounds cuter somehow?

I much prefer Eleanor, but then you will get people shortening to Ellie.

This is the reason we picked a name that can't be shortened for DD, it's drive me mad having spent so long picking a name only for people to change it!

I have a baby Nell as so far no one has called her Nellie apart from older relatives - i have then always corrected them.
I always introduce her as Nell & it seems to stick. It's a lovely gorgeous sweet name & not popular so I would say go for it !

I love Nell as a shortening for Eleanor. My sister's childhood best friend was called ir - I knew her from age 2-10 and she never got Nelly (which I agree is awful!).

Fab - I'm more than happy to (gently!) correct grandparents, who are the most likely to call her Nelly. I'm tempted to risk it as I really adore the name. Now to keep on convincing DH...

Watch out and make sure you police yourselves because when you have an adorable 2 year old you might be the ones calling her Nelly and suddenly it seems so natural and beautiful!

That's how one of our children ended up with her nickname we vowed 'never' to use. ...and we love it because of her.

Mine is 8 and no, she is never known as Nelly, though I don't object to the name.

I have a Penelope know as Nell (or Nellie which we're fine with) - I ummmed about using it because I really don't like Penny - we've always used Nell or Nellie and haven't had anyone use Penny. I think if you use Nell & it won't be much of a problem Smile

I don't have a Nell, or even know one, but I think if I had a close friend or was close to a baby Nell I would probably call her Nelly, at least some of the time...
Most names are subjected to an -y treatment at some point, hence the popularity of Millie, Tilly, Lily, Holly, Molly, Jonnie, Eddie etc :P
