So the criteria are - preferably a name that works in French as well as English (I'm half French and my own name is French and currently v popular in UK, but not when I was growing up in 80s!)

I like the 'old' circa 1920s names that are now trending.
Don't like fussy, overly girly, or flower names (with of course one or two exceptions, but as a general rule!)

Don't really want a top 10 name if can help it, although struggling so much that popularity is becoming less and less of a big deal...

My current (long) list is here:
Celeste
Gigi
Cosette
Colette
Clara
Ruby
Cora
Maude
Sybil
Mimi
Mabel
Audrey

What else might I like?

Marion.

I love Marion.

eatingforonemore · 29/08/2014 13:18

I went to school with a girl called Monét. I think it's a lovely pretty name.

BackspaceEnter · 29/08/2014 16:02

Maude is quite an ugly name. Your others are good though.

What about Vivienne?

Celestine.

ArsenicyOldFace · 29/08/2014 16:53

Maude is not at all ugly. It is compact and elegant and evocative of 'mauve'.

BackspaceEnter · 29/08/2014 18:47

To me it's evocative of drab, grey, wet, old lady. Each to to their own.

ArsenicyOldFace · 29/08/2014 18:48

Smelling faintly of cabbage? That's the other Maude Grin

BackspaceEnter · 29/08/2014 18:53

Grin Yes. On par with Mildred for me.

Merel · 29/08/2014 19:11

Another vote for Sylvie.

Or how about:

Violet
Adelle
Evelyn
Fleur
Lacey
Flori
Mallory
Mariska (would this work in French?)
Noella

Thanks all for new suggestions and thoughts on current list
Eatingforonemore - Loving Monet - not sure I'd be brave enough to use though...
And also liking Claudette...
Sadly, as I had a good friend at school called Esme this one doesn't work for me - although a great name

baskingseals · 24/09/2014 07:26

What about Gisele?

Dowser · 24/09/2014 08:21
