Edward - Ward???

Please help settle an argument between me and my friend.

She claims that Ward is a commonly used nickname for Edward.

I think she's wrong - I've never heard of anyone using Ward as a first name, let alone as a nickname for Edward.

Who's right?

I haven't heard of Ward as a nn before either - Ed, Eddie, Ted etc, but never Ward.

BikeRunSki · 28/08/2014 20:32

I've never heard it. It could work, but the "ward" of Edward is more "wood".

I have come across a Mothy (Timothy) and Topher (Chris...) though. But not commonly!

Bartlebee · 28/08/2014 20:33

Ward? Never, ever heard of it as a nn.

Slh122 · 28/08/2014 20:34

No. I have an Edward and gets Ted, Teddy, Tedward etc. But never heard of this Confused

basgetti · 28/08/2014 20:34

I've got an Edward and I've never heard this!

ajandjjmum · 28/08/2014 20:49

Never heard Ward as a Christian or nn.

TheFillyjonk · 28/08/2014 20:55

I do know an Edward whose nickname is Wardy.

However, I've never heard of any Edwards known as Ward. It doesn't mean that there aren't any, I suppose. Could Woody be a nickname for Edward?

GiniCooper · 28/08/2014 21:04

She won't be getting any aWards for that assumption...

See what I did there!!

No she's wrong, really.

scarletforya · 28/08/2014 21:04

Never, ever heard that.

GiniCooper · 28/08/2014 21:05

Did she maybe hear Edward Woodward and think it was Edward but ward?

ShadowStar · 28/08/2014 21:19

I always thought that Woody was a nickname for Woodrow?

I know someone called Ward but that's his full name, it isn't short for Edward.

flipflopsonfifthavenue · 29/08/2014 15:26

I've got an Edward, never heard of it

Clarabum · 29/08/2014 15:27

I knew a Ward once, he was american and his full name was Howard.

thegreylady · 29/08/2014 15:40

I have heard Woody but never Ward.

enriquetheringbearinglizard · 29/08/2014 15:45

I used to know a Ward. He was in his thirties and British.
It never even occurred to me to ask if it was short for anything else.

PinkAndBlueBedtimeBears · 29/08/2014 15:54

I've got an Edward, never heard of Ward as a nn!

bouncingbelle · 30/08/2014 01:57

I knew a ward short for Edward. He was a pompous twat!

Anjou · 31/08/2014 04:27

I've known of a couple of Wards (both American). Don't know if that was their name in full or a nn. When you think about it, it makes perfect sense that it's a nn for Edward, Howard etc, but it's never crossed my mind. There are more 'peculiar' ways to shorten a name - when you think about it, isn't James/Jim, William/Billy more of a leap, as the letters are changed?

Papyrus02 · 31/08/2014 20:28

I taught a Ward a few years back. Not an American either. I love it. Also love Edward

irememberwhenthiswasallfields · 31/08/2014 21:02

There are loads of nicknames for Edward: Ed, Eddie, Ted, Teddy and I've heard of Woody too. But Ward is a new one on me Hmm

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 31/08/2014 23:21

Never heard of the name ward as a nn for Edward.

pilates · 01/09/2014 08:50
