Edward - Ward???

Please help settle an argument between me and my friend.

She claims that Ward is a commonly used nickname for Edward.

I think she's wrong - I've never heard of anyone using Ward as a first name, let alone as a nickname for Edward.

Who's right?

I haven't heard of Ward as a nn before either - Ed, Eddie, Ted etc, but never Ward.

I've never heard it. It could work, but the "ward" of Edward is more "wood".

I have come across a Mothy (Timothy) and Topher (Chris...) though. But not commonly!

I do know an Edward whose nickname is Wardy.

However, I've never heard of any Edwards known as Ward. It doesn't mean that there aren't any, I suppose. Could Woody be a nickname for Edward?

I've known of a couple of Wards (both American). Don't know if that was their name in full or a nn. When you think about it, it makes perfect sense that it's a nn for Edward, Howard etc, but it's never crossed my mind. There are more 'peculiar' ways to shorten a name - when you think about it, isn't James/Jim, William/Billy more of a leap, as the letters are changed?
