Cannot find a name we BOTH like (girl)

Just had it confirmed number 2 is indeed a little girly and we are stuffed. We had no girls name agreed last time (ended up with a boy thankfully - but had he been a girl he'd have probably ended up being called "baby girl")

We have already been discussing girls names but need to get cracking now we know for sure.

I love Amber but it's our cats name. I did actually start a thread.. there was a pretty even split as to whether or not it's acceptable to name baby after a cat.

Also liked Indiana but every single person in RL I have mentioned it to has disliked it. I can handle a little dislike but this has been unanimous.

OH suggests names then goes off them. The only thing he hasn't gone off is Isabelle but I am not using the most popular name from 2013. If you combine the different spellings (Isabelle, Isabel and Isobel) and the variations (Isabella) it was by far the most popular name!!

Our son is a top 10 name so I am not adverse to popular names per se. But I like classic.

So far between us we've looked at - but ruled out

  • Imogen (I like this)
  • Charlotte (I like this too)
  • Juliette (I wasn't as keen, OH liked but talked himself out of)
  • Amy (OH liked)
  • Lucy (OH liked)
  • Chloe (OH liked)
  • Jessica (I like)

We both keep going back to Elizabeth, but I think that is more of a middle name?

We also both kind of liked Jasmine but it's not the name?

We aren't looking for old fashioned names as such but nothing "out there"

Any ideas hugely welcomed!

I used to teach a girl called Jessamine (not sure of spelling), but I always thought it was a good name. It's sort of a cross between Jessica and Jasmine so thought it might be one for you.

I have an Erin Charlotte and also liked Imogen but a friend used it - so we have similar taste! Other names on my list were Megan and Lauren (must be something about those names ending in 'n' for me!). I also liked Alice and Hannah or Anna. Not sure if that helps! Good luck finding the one and congrats!

MoonlightandRoses · 29/08/2014 23:30

Congratulations firstly! Going on variants of Elizabeth (Isobel etc are quite closely linked so there's obviously something about it you like) how about Ilse/Elsa/Eloise?

If not, are there any boys names you like that could either be adapted for a girl, or already have a female variant?

bouncingbelle · 30/08/2014 01:54

Elspeth instead of Elizabeth?

joanofarchitrave · 30/08/2014 02:10

Elisabeth is a nice variant and you could still have any of the nicknames. It's a gorgeous name IMO.

Alissa?

Or why not just go for what you really like (Indiana) and keep it a secret - nobody dares criticise once the baby is actually there, and more importantly, they stop wanting to criticise because they love the name because it belongs to the person they love.

Delphiniumsblue · 30/08/2014 07:26

If you use Elisabeth the child will have a lifetime of spelling it or correcting it.

What about Indira (In-dee-ra) instead of Indiana? It's not a British name but it's a lovely name IMO.

InLoveWithMattSmithsQuiff · 30/08/2014 18:09

Indiana or India is very pretty!

How about Ariella?

MaryWestmacott · 30/08/2014 18:24

Your DH's preferences for girls names makes me think of my DH's list, he also seemed to pick names that could potentially be a woman born late 70s/early 80s but classic - basically the nicer ones of the girls names they grew up with...

Yours are also classic names, but not one that were in fashion when you were young.

Anyway, you might have luck finding one you both like if you find a name that could your DH will have heard a bit more, and shorter, he doesnt seem to like long names.

right, suggestions from me:
Anna
Erin
Eleanor
Louise
Lydia
Lisa
Eloise
Helena
Harriet
Annabel

These would fit the "not outlandish, classic and could be a woman in her early 30s" criteria.

I watched credits on films to see if I could spot a name I liked. Always loved gone with wind, film and book so liked name katie-scarlet but my mom vetoed it. Tried to get away with Caitlyn Rose as a closer name but then had a boy Grin

Now I like Amelie, erin, lillie.

ataosathecheeseshah · 30/08/2014 19:32

What about Cassandane or Cassandra? Then you can shorten it to Cass.

lisaloulou84 · 30/08/2014 19:46

How about Alice or Hannah? Those were my favourites, we had a boy ( who's a Dylan but you could use that too!)

Mrsjinglejangle · 30/08/2014 20:43

I think Elizabeth is lovely great options for nicknames- Betsy is fab.
Also yy to Alexandra, Francecsa, Georgia and Victoria all great suggestions beautiful classic names for children and adults :)

Mrsjinglejangle · 30/08/2014 20:44

francesca even damn iphone!

Mammanat222 · 01/09/2014 12:53

Thanks to everyone who has taken the time to reply.

We have big families so a lot of names are ruled out (Alice, Katie or any variations, Chloe, Lauren plus a few more)

We do like Isabelle but it's just too darn popular.

I have always liked Erin, trying to get OH on board. Also had a weekend of loving Juliette.

Have printed off top 500 names of 2013, so we'll go through them.

OH is stuck in a bit of a time warp me thinks. His suggestions have included Joanne, Nicole and Shannon !!!!

Elsbeth or lilibet ?!

PetaPipa · 05/09/2014 20:38

Isadora?

Mammanat222 · 07/09/2014 19:34

We've stopped discussing names as every time we do it results in me wanting to throw something at him.

He has a shit name, a real crappy name - not his fault I know and he hates it but he seems to have inherited his parents crap taste in names.

Still on Elizabeth, trying to get him back to considering Erin as I really do like it.

By the way DS is James - Is James and Elizabeth a bit too much??

OP posts:
myotherusernameisbetter · 07/09/2014 22:27

James & Elizabeth sounds really nice
so does James and Erin

LadyDowagerHatt · 07/09/2014 23:36

Biased but I love Erin, and James and Erin goes well.

LadyDowagerHatt · 07/09/2014 23:37

Just thought, I know a James and Robyn which I think goes well - could Robyn be a compromise?

F0ssil · 07/09/2014 23:40

love Juliet and Elizabeth.
