Do you think my child would like having this as her name as a grown women?

No, I don't.

MirandaGoshawk · 27/08/2014 20:37

Me neither. Kangaroos.

CorporateRockWhore · 27/08/2014 20:39

Hmm. I don't mind traditional boys names for girls, but Joey reminds me of Dawsons Creek, kangaroos and thick people - Joey on Friends and Blossoms brother.

Is it an option to give a longer name and have Joey as a nickname?

I was obsessed with having a daughter named Davey after reading Tiger Eyes by Judy Blume, but DH is Dave so felt it would be weird...Grin

AuntieStella · 27/08/2014 20:53

To me, it says Chalet School, as the central character Josephine M Bettany is Joey most of the time.

birdofthenorth · 27/08/2014 20:53

I really like it, but if it was me I'd be tempted to put a longer version on the birth cert... I like Josphine much more than Joanne/ Joanna.

Or you could consider Joely?

ShirleyYoureNotSerious · 27/08/2014 21:07

I like it and with good reason but I have reservations too.

My aunt's in her 70s. She's called Joey by all her friends and half of our family. It was a nickname given to her by her late husband when they first met. I've no idea why because her real name is Victoria!

My reservation is because of the difference between gaining it as a nickname as an adult and being named it as a child. My aunt's very practical and down to earth and has never been a girly woman. It suits her fine and always has but if your daughter turns into a more feminine, girly woman it probably won't work so well and she might not thank you for it.

You might be better to choose a name which you love just as much and opt for Joey as a short version or to call her something with no connection to Joey and to use that as a completely off the wall nickname.

thegreylady · 27/08/2014 21:38

My Joanna was Joey as a little girl but as an adult much prefers Jo or the full name Joanna. There are many names which shorten to Joey and I would choose one of those if I were you.

LaceyLee · 27/08/2014 21:42

Go for Josephine nn Joey then if she wants she can keep it as an adult or choose Josephine or Josie. Joey is a nickname and she should be able to choose her own nickname as an adult, IMO

Sophronia · 27/08/2014 23:14

Joanna or Josephine nn Joey would be much better.

Linguaphile · 27/08/2014 23:20

As in Joey on Dawson's Creek? Not my favourite association.

MrsBungle · 27/08/2014 23:22

I have an auntie joey! Short for Josephine

MrsMarigold · 27/08/2014 23:23

I know a Georgina nn Joey - one of the loveliest people in the world.

BackforGood · 27/08/2014 23:27

No.
I know a Joanna who liked being called Joey as a child, but not then as a teen or adult apart from as a pet name by very close family.
Give her the option of Joanne/Joanna / Josephine and use it as a nick name maybe?

manicinsomniac · 28/08/2014 13:51

I've only come across this in the Chalet School. I definitely wouldn't do it as a full name.

I love Joanna and like Josephine too. Also you've got Joelle, Jocasta, Joanne and Josefina as other options for Joey.

zingally · 29/08/2014 13:22

Only as a nickname.

PilauMice · 29/08/2014 13:24

Dawson's Creek? I love Joey, but I would use Josephine as the full name.

WandaDoff · 29/08/2014 13:35

Josephine, Joan, Jocelyn, Joely, Joy, Joyce, Joanna, Jodie.

You can call her Joey right from birth if thats what you want, but I'm not keen on shortened names on birth certificates.

That is just my opinion obviously, but you did ask Smile

Thurlow · 29/08/2014 13:40

I like it, but then I do like those sort of unisex names for girls anyway (Alex, Joey, Georgie etc) and they do tend to be a bit marmite.

I'd go for a longer name on the birth certificate though.

aubreye · 29/08/2014 15:52

If it was short for Josephine, Jolene, Joanna etc then yes that's fine, but by itself...definitely not.
