For a boy (obviously?)

As in 'The venerable...'

Nice, but yes anyone not in the know will just think 'Bead?!'

Don't call his brother Hama.

But yes it is really nice. I don't see a problem at all really.

Unusual names are good.

I like it! Much better than name suggested in other thread!!

Great! it's been on my list for ages and there weren't even three of them last year. Everyone can say it too.

I like it. I've never met a Bede, but if I did, I'd think Bede, not Bead. I'd guess Bede had a brother Aidan and sisters Hilda and Ethel. I'd visualise them as bright, polite, cheerful children.

I like it. Vereable Bed = awesome. Interesting name meaning too = prayer.

I can spell Venerable, honestly. The keyboard on this computer gets stuck ...

I met a baby Bede (actually 2 of them at the one playgroup which was quite extraordinary!) for the first time a little while ago. I had never heard the name before. I just assumed the parents were extremely hippy or something (I was thinking Bead).

I know (now) that it's an old English name but I initially assumed it was a made-up name.

Florascotia I thought you'd written 'The Venereal Bede' then for a minute!!

Now THAT conjures up a completely different set of visuals Grin

Eek, I don't like it sorry. It's one of those names that combines rarity with one extremely famous owner that just means I can't think of it as a name but only as that person if that makes sense.

I do sort of see your point, maybe. Sort of.

I love it. I also love Anselm and Dunstan, and also Berengaria and Elfrieda..

It was a (fairly grim) hall of residence at my university so that clouds it for me... but it's not that bad.

Just avoid naming his sister Pearl, Ruby, Jade etc, else they will just sound like a pair of earrings. Grin

No, sorry, I don't like it. It's 'old fat man who drinks too much' for me.

ArsenicyOldFace · 28/08/2014 11:43

Why Primal!? Is that a Bede you know? Or?

I think it was in a film (maybe Simon Callow, not sure). It's just the image I get.

ArsenicyOldFace - it was pretty dilapidated when I was there, I would be surprised if it was still standing TBH! Grin

There was a Bede college at the uni I went to aswell (well, it used to be Bede, by the time I was there it had combined to become St Hild and St Bede) - Durham University.

PPaka · 28/08/2014 13:09

I think most people would just think St Bede, rather than Bede the venerable.
I only knew because there was a local school St Bedes
Maybe it depends how religious you are

ArsenicyOldFace · 28/08/2014 13:27

Yes. Quick way to sort the religious types from historians, maybe Smile

But, but, he was St. Bede the Venerable, aka The Venerable Bede, wasn't he?

He is Saint Bede the Venerable in the Orthodox and RC churches anyway, with feast days of 27 and 25 May respectively, and also in the Anglican church afaik.

Maybe the Saint/Venerable divide is more likely to flush out the dissenting vs established divide? Wink

I think there's scope for it to be pronounced bidet which might put me off from using it
