Hello,

I'm 30 weeks and haven't found out the sex yet but DH and I both like Abigail, just wondering if we could have some thoughts on it? Middle name is probably going to be Louise, boys names are mostly sorted.

Thanks.

I really like Abigail and it goes well with Louise. Would you be happy for it to be shortened to Abbie ?

itsmecathy · 23/08/2014 06:21

Love the name (and the shortened version )!

swimmerforlife · 23/08/2014 06:24

Thanks for the (good) opinions guys :) I would be happy for it to be shortened to Abbie but I think I prefer it spelt 'Abi'.

We have an Abigail - Abigail Sofia. Abigail means 'father's joy' in hebrew which is lovely (it also means 'servant' from 16th C England which is not so lovely but you can choose to ignore that, we did).

Ours is never shortened, never has been and if you dared to you would be told "My name is Abigail, not Abi" ... from the age of about 3.

We still love it years on.

Ooooh my favourite girls name. Ds was going to be abigail if he was a girl. It's a lovely name and I love that it means father s joy.

KiltedKoala · 23/08/2014 07:07

DD is Abigail Rebecca, love the name, always been one of my faves (although we did end up with about 10 girls names chosen by time she was born) we haven't shortened it yet but most friends do (and ransoms in the street but don't get me started on thatGrin)

I have an Abbie.

Teachers/friends parents etc all make it longer sometimes so it's not just shortening a name that can be annoying Grin

She does just answer though, and I never 'bite' even when her school report came home with the wrong bloody name on it

DurhamDurham · 23/08/2014 09:25

I wanted Abigail for my youngest but husband wasn't keen. I compromised on Abbie. Husband even managed to convince me to have his sister's name as her middle name. I really must have been a pushover back in those days Grin

OldCatLady · 23/08/2014 09:35

I love the name! Though I used the name for a pet do could never be for my child now!

Though I slightly agree Abigail Louise is a bit of a mouthful

swimmerforlife · 23/08/2014 10:09

Thank you for the thoughts :)

No offence taken broken, I get what you saying about Abigail Louise being a mouthful, I think I'll keep Louise as a middle name as it's my mum's middle name but i'll add a another middle name- I'll ask DH if their's a name special to him that he wants as a middle name.

Love it!

pommedeterre · 23/08/2014 10:12

We have Abigail Hazel - Hazel being my mums middle name!

We use Abbie. It does get different spellings but I don't mind.

She's 2.6 and has just got into the idea of being 'Abigail' - one of her little friends calls her Abigail!

ralinax294 · 23/08/2014 16:48

I like Abigail and think Abigail Louise is nice.

sweetkitty · 23/08/2014 16:56

Ours is Abigail Sadie shortened to Abbie

WaffleWiffle · 23/08/2014 17:04

Imo should be shortened to Abby.

weatherall · 23/08/2014 17:11

I like Abigail and abbey as a nn.

sleepdodger · 23/08/2014 17:12

If you're calling get Abigail and want a nick name it's Abi not abbey Abbie aby etc... My sister has had this for years with her dd
It's a gorgeous name underused classic yet modern too
-also kept our biblical name loving mother happy Wink

Castlemilk · 24/08/2014 10:59

It's not my fave, I think because I don't like Abby/Abi/Abbie, which reminds me of dodgy celebs.

But the one I know is always called Abigail which is nice.

It doesn't go with Louise, I think - say it out loud, you have to stop short between the two Ls.

burgatroyd · 24/08/2014 11:38

Don't like the Gail bit!

lavendersun · 24/08/2014 13:22

OP - for some reason I thought about your name again today - I think Abigail Louise sounds lovely and I think it will be really nice for your daughter to know that her middle name comes from someone much loved when she is old enough to appreciate it.

As for it being a mouthful - probably no more than most name combos so I wouldn't let that put you off at all or make you think you need to add another one in.

And lets face it 99.9% of the time she will introduce herself as Abigail or Abigail Surname, basically the middle name is just for forms but it will be lovely to have one that means something.

jaamy · 10/09/2014 17:11

Hello! DD2 is Abigail Isobel. One more syllable than Abigail Louise and I don't think that is a mouthful! It actually runs into one another quite nicely - Abigailouise. And TBH, is she going to use her middle name much?
One of my best friends is a Gael and I hadn't made the association between Abigail and Gael (or Gail) until she commented on how much she liked the name.
Agree with sleepdodger regarding Abi is the shortened version rather than Abbie or Abbey, which are surely the shortened versions of Abbigail.
Everyone makes different associations with different names and if you haven't had a bad experience with (or read about) someone of that name, then you are none the wiser!
When Abigail was named, my sister made some stupid comment about Abi Titmuss. Who? Exactly!
Anyway, hope all goes well with the birth and that Abigail Louise (or whoever you decide she is) is as happy and healthy as my Abigail. Grinx
