My shortlist for a girl now would be

Persephone (but i might not be brave enough as its a bit too trying to be posh)
Clara
Emily
Elizabeth

I have a lucy and a rebecca.

Esmae is very popular there will be three others in the class

eatingforonemore · 14/08/2014 21:28

Ava
Sapphire ( nickname Sapphy)

Thisbe!!!

Please someone use this... Sad face that I didn't and I want there to be a baby Thisbe. Thizzy for nn.

burgatroyd · 15/08/2014 08:42

Thisbe sounds similar to Esmae

Misfitless · 15/08/2014 09:33

Thisbe sounds more like frisbee, than Esme to me!

Charlotte (Lottie nn, perhpas)

Esther

Mary

RiverTam · 15/08/2014 09:41

surely Esmae is a spelling mistake? It's Esme (pronounced either Esmee (British) or Esmay (French)).

Not sure about Thisbe, I always think it sounds like you have a lisp when you say it!

Phoebe perhaps? or Phaedra? Elizabeth, nn Libby?

freyaW2014 · 15/08/2014 09:44

Eve is my favourite and I'm pregnant with a girl so my baby will be Eve :)

HollyBen · 15/08/2014 09:58

I love Phoebe. Probably won't use it for DC2 as it is DDs best friends name. We like Daisy, Alyssa, Molly and Emily for DD. Like Flora if DC2 is a girl but early days so not got much further than that.
btw I also really like Esme. I have only come across 1

mrsnec · 15/08/2014 09:59

We're going with Eve as a middle name probably. It's growing on me which is a turn up for the books because I started out saying no religious names under any circumstances!

dh loves Charlotte but I'm not keen.

he vetoed Persephone too after he'd stopped laughing his head off.

Thisbe is nice but is a local plonk here allbeit a delicious one it would be like calling her chardonnay.

Pheobe also on our list. From the other names mentioned I like Clara, Aluna and Valentina.

My favourites:

Mollie (can't get husband to agree to the -ie spelling, he likes Molly)
Alice (can't get husband to agree to this at all!)
Alana (rhymes with our surname)
Eve: (I've liked this for a long time, but slightly put off by the fact I know four Eve's born in the past year)

Esmae is lovely!

manicinsomniac · 15/08/2014 15:56

Esmae isn't a spelling mistake. Esme, Esmee and Esmae are all in common use (there's an Esmae in Twilight). I've never met an Esmae though so I don't know if it is pronounced Es-mee or Es-may. I quite like it both ways though.

I've never heard of Aluna. It has a pleasant sound to it but I'd worry about other kids calling her 'a-loner' or 'a-loony'

Based on those two, how about these (I think) fairly unusual names:
Ayla, Aria, Anya, Asia, Asha, Ashleigh, Aubrey, Audrey, Aurora, Amanda, Ariel, April, Briley, Brodie, Bronte, Billie, Bryony, Brenna, Cora, Cara, Calista, Casey, Callie, Connie, Cherry, Claudia, Dulcie, Dixie, Edie, Emery, Ebony, Erica, Faye, Falon, Giselle, Hadleigh, Honey, Hayley, Hetty, Hattie, Isis, Ida, Jessie, Jodi, Kiki, Keltie, Leonie, Leona, Lara, Lana, Livia, Marta, Mala, Mina, Mirren, Nadia, Nia, Nyah, Piper, Polly, Roxie, Romilly, Rowena, Sadie, Susie, Taryn, Talia, Verity, Xanthe, Zia.

Mumtobenovember · 15/08/2014 16:28

We would pronounce it es-may but spell it esmae I like it again now arhhhh this is hard Confused

no, there isn't, it's Esme Cullen in Twilight. Honestly, it isn't a valid spelling of Esme.

manicinsomniac · 15/08/2014 17:36

Oh okay, I remembered wrong then. But Esmae ranks 153rd for girls names in 2013 - pretty valid isn't it?!

UriGeller · 15/08/2014 17:43

Esme (however you want o spell it, it sounds the same) is lovely, and won't get her bullied at school. Names rarely do.

PeriodMath · 16/08/2014 14:50

Why not just spell it the right way? Esme is lovely. I met one once, her sister was Juno.
