2 week old boy with no name

My husband and I are at our wits end. We just had baby number 4, who surprised us by being a boy after the three girls we already have. All through pregnancy we struggled to find a boy name and only had a vague shortlist. On the day of the pregnancy we decided to be brave and go for Jesse, as we wanted a name that was not frequently used and worked with our last name.

Since then we’ve had completely polar responses, half positive and half negative, with some people giving us unsolicited criticism. The negative half haven’t liked the name, or view it as too feminine, perhaps see it as too American or androgynous, or simply find it “surprising” – and not in a positive way. My husband also hadn’t thought that the obvious short version is Jess, which is clearly feminine.

We’re not worried about our personal feelings, but my husband now feels that in the UK it is just a bit too “edgy” and doesn’t want his boy to have to deal with unpredictable responses later in life such as the ones we’ve faced, even if they’re fleeting. It’s not that we feel it’s a massive disadvantage, but it just seems an unnecessary risk/burden. Despite this, it’s still our favourite name...!

In the last few days we’ve agreed that we both like Ross (but not as much as Jesse), and now my husband’s suggested Roscoe, a Norse name meaning “from the deer wood”, which remains unusual but is definitely male, can be shortened to Ross easily, works well with our last name, and doesn’t seem to have any negative connotations.

I am very sad about the whole thing and can’t let go of my emotional attachment to Jesse, plus we told everyone on the day he was Jesse. So I’m reaching out to you to ask for some objective views about Roscoe, Ross and Jesse, or about the situation as a whole as we’re finding it hard to know what to do next, and I want to bond with my boy!

What about Rossi? It's Italian and I've only met one and never in 14 years of teaching.

MrsMinton · 14/08/2014 20:07

Jesse Roscoe. It's your child and if you love the name then use it. I think it's a lovely choice.

Davidtennantmistress · 14/08/2014 20:13

I love Jesse. It's on my list but not hubs. Git. You both love the name so go with it I say. :)

TheTravellingLemon · 14/08/2014 20:17

If you love the name, go for it. Personally I really like it too, but am not keen on Roscoe. Have you thought of Grayson nn Gray? It feels similar for some reason, but that might be just me!

Congratulations Flowers

scratchandsniff · 14/08/2014 20:19

Go for it. A friend has just had a baby boy called Jesse. I think it will grow in popularity due to Breaking Bad.

TortoiseUpATreeAgain · 14/08/2014 20:20

Jesse so long as you're not in Scotland.

Roscoe makes me think of this chap (but then I am Well Old):

Dont like jesse for boy.jess as diminutive is definitely female
Ross i like
Roscoe i like

scottishmummy · 14/08/2014 20:22

Jsssie is scottish colloquial. For a feartie cat

sandberry · 14/08/2014 20:24

I like Jesse and Jess is not obviously feminine, what about Jess the cat? there is some research that having a unisex name is a benefit in terms of jobseeking so tell that to the detractors. It is a nice old biblical name.

Ross and Roscoe are fine too but Jesse is more of a classic name and has stayed steadily at the bottom of the top 200 for 16 years now so not like he'd be the only one nor is it outrageously popular.

AtiaoftheJulii · 14/08/2014 20:25

Love Jesse. (Am in UK.) Don't like Ross, but Roscoe is pretty cool. Monroe?

CorporateRockWhore · 14/08/2014 20:26

I'm Scottish, and Jesse would be a massive no from me, as that's what we would call someone who was being a big scaredy cat. Grin

It's not my cup of tea anyway. Roscoe sounds a LOT cooler than Jesse.

turdfairynomore · 14/08/2014 20:32

Love Jesse. Would use J/Jay as nn

Itsfab · 14/08/2014 20:33

Stop listening to other people! You get to name your baby whatever the hell you like what with him being YOURS! Having said that, as you are allowing people to dissuade you then you are obviously not 100% sure about the name.

What about Fred?

Itsfab · 14/08/2014 20:36

Stuff that, your baby is definitely a Jesse!!!

mummaduke · 14/08/2014 20:37

Jesse is a fab name. I know a baby boy Jesse :0)

I am amazed that people are so brazen as to give you 'negative feedback' on your brand new baby boy's name!! I'm shocked and think people ought to butt out and smile - who bloody cares what they think???

Stick with it. Please. You'll only be resentful in years to come if you don't.

Sophronia · 14/08/2014 20:49

Jesse is lovely and much better than Roscoe. Ross is nice enough.

TheresLotsOfFarmyardAnimals · 14/08/2014 20:54

Me too mammaduke!! How dare they? Tg

scottishmummy · 14/08/2014 20:55

No one is brazen.the infant us unnamed.op asked directly for opinion on jesse
If one directly asks for feedback, then yes she'll get feedback.thats how it works
Had someone made unwanted unsolicited comment, that'd be brazen

burgatroyd · 14/08/2014 21:08

Jesse is lovely but he will prob get called a big Jesse!

Roscoe however is fabulous.

I rarely post on boy name threads but I really love Roscoe.

With Jessica being in the to 10 I think Jesse is more associated with girls

tshirtsuntan · 14/08/2014 21:11

Aaw, just call him Ted Grin

jazzyjenbo · 14/08/2014 21:11

I wouldnt call my son jesse if i'm honest but i dont mind it.

I know sum1 with Roscoe as a surname so that puts me off (not keen on last names as first names though)

Ross reminds me of friends

Jess the cat is male! (Postman pat)

If u like jesse go with it! There are plenty of names out there that could be seen as 'meaning' other things, i saw a post about aphelia for a girl and just thought 'i feel your...'

P.s on the beautiful newborn!

Enjoyingmycoffee1981 · 14/08/2014 21:13

I like Jesse. Stand by it.

tshirtsuntan · 14/08/2014 21:13

honeybeeridiculous · 14/08/2014 21:15
