Hi

DH prefers Max (not sure of BC name yet) & I prefer Tom ( Thomas on BC). We like these names, they are lovely strong boys names, but we don't Love them.

Ideally I would have Magnus & DH would have Jake. We've both counter vetoed these!

Any suggestions appreciated.

IMO, Tom is the same type of name as William, Henry, Edward, Jonathan, James, George, Charles, Robert, Christopher, Stephen, Michael, Peter and John. Classic, traditional English (in usage, not necessarily origin) and pretty timeless.

Max (if Maximilian) is a name like Oliver, Julian/Julius, Arthur, Miles, Hugo, Dominic, Sebastian, Giles, Alexander/Alasdair, Horatio, Rupert, Oscar, Leo, Theodore, Frederick, Roland etc. They are perfectly mainstream but also have a bit of dash and swagger about them - or perhaps a touch of the classical or the continental - and go in and out of fashion quite rapidly. Some, like Oliver, are very popular at the moment.

You might also like Biblical names; some of those are quite fashionable at the moment: Isaac, Joshua, Moses, Jonah, Jonas, Abraham, Silas, Gabriel etc - or the more traditional Matthew, Mark, Luke, Joseph, Tobias/Toby, Daniel, Samuel ...

There are also 'old man' names: Albert, Stanley, Frank(Francis), Wilfred, Walter, Leonard, Percy, Reginald...

And Old English names: Edgar, Edmund, Swithin, Wystan, Cuthbert, Siward, Alban, Hereward, Bede, Chad..

You could have Magnus with Max as a nickname?

UriGeller · 12/08/2014 14:30

I really like Samson, with Sam as nn. Or my all time favourite boys name, Joe (Joseph)

Montsti · 12/08/2014 17:55

I like them both, possibly prefer Maximilian nn. Max. Samson or Samuel nn. Sam lovely too and I would categorise Sam, Tom & Max as similar types of names - all lovely!

Fwiw I don't like Jake at all nor do I like Magnus!

Magnus is such a great name. It fits your preference for strong, is classic and refreshingly underused (not sure why!). Also not unusual. Isn't too far from Max either. Any chance your DH will come around closer to the big day?

Really love Max too and don't actually know of any in the many baby circles I frequent (London). There are SO many little Thomas/Toms around though if that bothers you?

Other suggestions, most already mentioned....Tobias/Toby, George, Edmund, Joseph/Joe. I second the vote for Sam/Samuel. Very strong, classic and I don't hear of many little Sams around. Great name.

These were both in our short list for our son who we named Lewis. The only other name on our short list was Sam. This time we also like Oliver and Keir

I'd choose Max out of those two with Thomas as the middle name. I'm finding Tom a bit dull now, although I used to love it.
