Heard this pronounced differently from how I pronounce it the other week and it took me by surprise. Have since heard it pronounced 'the other' way twice more which got me thinking.

So... Do you/would you pronounce it A-mos or Ay-mos???

Well it simply is NEVER A Moss it is always AY MOSS with the AY to rhyme with HAY. Do you mean you've heard it said "A-Moss with a short A sound?

msrisotto · 11/08/2014 20:37

Does it rhyme with anus?

scaevola · 11/08/2014 20:39

Knock, knock

Who's there?

Amos

Amos who?

A mosquito

MrsJoshuaLyman · 11/08/2014 20:45

I always pronounce it Ay-mos (to rhyme with hay-mos)

Hearing it pronounced with the short 'a' sound several times recently took me by surprise.

Ay-mos. Never heard it pronounced Ah-mos.

Our dog is called Amos and we live in Canada. No one gets his name right! It always gets turned into A-moose. I might try that mosquito joke next time someone struggles, they just don't seem to hear it right. Not that he care mind Grin

Never heard it as a moss with a short A. Sounds a bit odd.

I know a 9 yo Amos, pronounced like the start of "A Mosquito". Ay-Moss.

rachel234 · 12/08/2014 07:06

Depends on the language. In many languages eg German and French Otis pronounced Ah-moss.

rachel234 · 12/08/2014 07:06

it is (not Otis)

rachel234 · 12/08/2014 07:09

Just like Amadeus or Amaretto the name Amos would be pronounced Ah-mos.

florascotia · 12/08/2014 09:32

But Amos has completely different origins from Amadeus and Amaretto. Both those are Italian with Latin origins (Amadeus from the verb 'to love' and Amaretto form the adjective for 'bitter'). In Italian and modern Latin pronounciation, the 'Am' in those names is said like the English word 'am' or like 'ahm'.

Amos is the name of an Old Testament prophet; it's from the Hebrew language. In British and American English, it is pronounced Ay-mos or Ay-mus. You can listen here: www.forvo.com/search/Amos/
Singer Tori Amos says her name that way, as well.

My friend has a little Amos (AY-moss) and he is adorable. An old soul's name on a tiny baby.

MrsMilton · 16/08/2014 15:49

Makes me think of Amos from Emmerdale Farm! Not keen tbh.

Clawdy · 16/08/2014 23:07

Amos and Andy! 1950s comedy series...showing my age...

Cheeky76890 · 17/08/2014 09:49

Aymos is the pronounciation. The 0 changes the sound of the A to a long A sound

Cheeky76890 · 17/08/2014 09:51

I think most in the uk would pronounce it that way too

birdofthenorth · 18/08/2014 15:41

Yes pronounced Ay-moss and I love it. Fab name. Mossy it a cute nickname.
