Hi
I know myself how I would be pronouncing it if I was to choose this name but was just wondering how others would pronounce it,
Ok so it would be used if I was to have a boy:
it is Ephan.

Ee-fun I think..?

InternetFOREVER · 10/08/2014 10:34

I wouldn't know whether to pronounce it Eff-ann or Eef-ann. I guess actually Eff-ann?

rootypig · 10/08/2014 10:34

Eh-fan

MrsBungle · 10/08/2014 10:35

I've never heard of it. If I saw it written down, I would assume it was eh-fan.

rootypig · 10/08/2014 10:35

Oh yes internet that is a much better way of spelling what I mean! Grin eff-ann

SavoyCabbage · 10/08/2014 10:36

Like Ethan but with an 'f' rather than a th'. Like is Sonia from Eastenders was saying Ethan.

MuttonCadet · 10/08/2014 10:38

Ee-fan, but I've not heard the name before so could have got it horribly wrong.

wafflyversatile · 10/08/2014 10:39

Eefin. eg same as ethan but with an f.

or possibly effin (and blindin'? )

pissedglitter · 10/08/2014 10:41

I would think someone had made up a 'new' spelling for Ethan
But obviously using f instead of th therefor also saying it wrong

whatadrain · 10/08/2014 10:51

If I saw it on the register I would call them 'Ethan' which I would no doubt be corrected on for the rest of the time I teach them for! That said, EF- an does sound quite nice Smile

LizzieMint · 10/08/2014 10:53

I'd pronounce it as Ethan with an f too. So ee-fan.

queenasanti3 · 10/08/2014 10:53

Thanks for the response,

i would pronounce it as E Phan (e fan), so basically Ethan, never realised it before thats how i actually say ethan, like e fan not that i have any trouble with speech just think it may be where iam from and the way we pronounce things.
my only worry was what 'waffly' said re: effin (blindin) thats what i think alot of people may think.

it did actually come up when i googled it spelt that way so please don't think I am just making it up haha, still thinking of names just trying to get ideas x

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 10/08/2014 10:55

I mean Ee-Fan

queenasanti3 · 10/08/2014 10:55

i also do like Ef an, but worried about the whole ein blindin thing,
now you all know what do you think of it ? x

BigfootFiles · 10/08/2014 10:56

Ee-fan.

BigfootFiles · 10/08/2014 10:57

I think you should go with Ethan.

Capitola · 10/08/2014 11:05

It sounds like an east end/Essex pronunciation of Ethan. Not good.

WhispersOfWickedness · 10/08/2014 11:18

Eefan, it would make me think you were mispronouncing/misspelling Ethan.
It does remind me a bit of another name though, Ephraim, which has two pronounciations, Eefrum and Ef-rum.

MrsCosmopilite · 10/08/2014 11:21

Sounds like a mispronunciation/misspelling of Ethan.

when I was trying to find names I liked for (then unborn and gender unknown) DC, I had a spreadsheet!
I didn't keep unusual spellings in, but I did keep names that had interesting meanings. In the end I settled for something traditional, versatile and reasonably timeless with a number of varied associations. Also turned out to be a name that's been in both mine and DH's families over a number of generations.

TooMuchToDoTooLittleInclinatio · 10/08/2014 11:21

I haven't looked at the other replies yet - but I would probably mumble 'Efan/evan' making it sound like 'Efvan'.

Right - off to go and see how badly I've mangled it Grin

ShadowStar · 10/08/2014 11:24

I thought epp - han when I read the op.

The ph = f thing didn't occur until I read the other posts Blush

TooMuchToDoTooLittleInclinatio · 10/08/2014 11:30

I think it's one thing to use a name that's unusal or difficult in another country/language if it's from your culture/country/whatever (ie a lot of the welsh/irish/french names used in England) but it's another to use one of those if it's not. ie Aoife - lovely Irish name when said by someone Irish, but ends up being a mangled version of Eva by non Irish people. Fine if you or the Dad are Irish, pointless if you are both English. IMO.

LoxleyBarrett · 10/08/2014 12:17

Not good - if I heard it I would assume you couldn't pronounce "th". Ethan is so much nicer.

florascotia · 10/08/2014 17:12

Ephan is a GIRL'S name - a variant of Euphemia: nameberry.com/babyname/Ephan
