Crazy to consider Soyuz...

as a middle name?

I know it sounds crazy and it probably is, so feel free to tell me so.

Space is one of our favourite subjects, and our DS has nicknamed our little boy; Soyuz. Today, DH told me that he actually really likes it.

But is it a suitable baby/child/adult middle name?

It's certainly very unusual, and if you were talking first names, I'd be a firm no.

But I think that you can get away with most things if it's as a middle name, because they're a lot less visible. So I reckon if you want it as a middle name, go for it.

I personally don't like it at all, I just don't think it sounds like a name. There are other space- themed names that are much nicer, like Orion or Apollo.

No

As a middle name no problems at all. Quite cute actually

BlueStarsAtNight - DH vetoed Orion and ds4 is called Apollo.

Just wondered if it was worth adding the naming list we have. I'm not too keen on it but DH and DS1 are ganging up on me Grin.

Soyuz is a real word in Russian, as well as a spacecraft name.
It means 'Union'. Would you be happy to name a baby Union in English - if so, OK I suppose.

squoosh · 10/08/2014 15:51

I don't think middle names can be too crazy. Go for it if you love it.

squoosh · 10/08/2014 15:53

That wasn't very clear. What I mean is that I don't think you need to be as careful with a middle name as you do with a first name.

Let your crazy ideas run free.

MultipleMama · 10/08/2014 16:05

My family is Russian so I know what it means but more people will know it as the Spacecraft rather than the translation :)

I caved and added it to the list, my ds qas over the moon about this haha.

I can remember twins being names Soyuz and Apollo following the joint USA/ussr mission of the 1970s. I thought they were cool names!

RedToothBrush · 10/08/2014 16:41

Personally, I don't see anything wrong with using it as a name if its something meaningful or important to you. I think since you have a Russian family connection, its even more meaningful in a way too.

People name their children, just because they like the sound of the name, and it conforms to convention. So why be funny about it - if thats a good enough reason for a name, then why aren't your reasons?

florascotia · 10/08/2014 17:05

If you have a family connection with Russia and know what the name means, then that's a big difference. If you like it, why not?

HPparent · 10/08/2014 17:15

I really like it. I like space related stuff. Go for it.

BlueStarsAtNight · 10/08/2014 19:21

If you have Russian connections then it seems a little less odd, so no harm having it on the mn list I guess!

Kittykatmacbill · 10/08/2014 21:59

Totally go for it! It's a great sounding word, with lovely meaning and it mean something to you too!
