Worried I've chosen the wrong name! Baby is already registered though!

I'd had my heart set on the name Alizabeth (untraditional, but my grandmother's name) but when she was born it just didn't suit her strawberry blond hair that I was expecting to be dark!

My daughter is 7 weeks old and it took me two weeks from when she was born to decide on her name, my back up names were Elysia and Larissa. In the end I chose Larissa as I felt it sat better with her middle names (Rose Alizabeth) but now I'm worried that is sounds quite 'chavvy', for want of a better word.

I'm not sure if the doubt is stemming from the opinions of family members, all of whom said they preferred Elysia! (She is called Lissy for short, which is the shortened version I had chosen for either name). Could I please have some honest opinions on how the name Larissa sounds?

I know a Larissa, she is a high achieving business student (and black belt). I would guess it's a fairly unusual name at the moment, but quite recognisable, unlikely to be misspelled or pronounced. It doesn't have any particular class connotations to me, although Clarissa, which sounds very similar is quite 'jolly hockey sticks' in my mind.

dramajustfollowsme · 07/08/2014 04:12

I think it is lovely. Congratulations! Ignore other people and enjoy those newborn cuddles.

wattlegirl · 07/08/2014 04:19

I think Larissa is very pretty and feminine. The short version of Lissy is really sweet too.

I say keep it and don't listen to those being negative the name.

TeenageMutantNinjaTurtle · 07/08/2014 04:46

It's a lovely name, don't let yourself be swayed by family.

But just so you know, you can change a baby's name on the birth certificate for up to a year after they are born.

Giraffeseyelashes · 07/08/2014 04:50

I like it.

burgatroyd · 07/08/2014 07:02

Its a stronger sounding name than Elysia.

If you wanted to change though its easy and free to do it in first year. You can do it only once. You need to fill out a change of name not given in baptism form and go back in. Old name will remain on new cert but new name will appear on bottom.

Congrats!

Larissa is much nicer. It's a lovely name. Congratulations!

Thank you everyone, you've all given me so much more peace of mind!

It is lovely. The full version is strong and elegant and your short version is sweet. She could also choose to shorten it to Lara if she wished when she was older (very Dr Zhivago/Julie Christie)

Shockingundercrackers · 07/08/2014 09:55

Much nicer! My GP is called Larissa and she's rather posh. Beautiful name OP don't change it.

YouWithTheFace · 07/08/2014 09:58

I think they're all lovely! You don't need to change her name :)

Guin1 · 07/08/2014 10:38

I much prefer Larissa to Elysia. Plus it's more likely to be spelt and pronounced correctly.

CustardFromATin · 07/08/2014 11:57

Larissa is lovely!

Not that it matters if you love it, but I find it a lot classier than Elysia, which sounds to me to be a bit of a 'made up' name.

Go with what your gut is telling you, ignore the others - and congratulations on your little girl! Smile

Onesleeptillwembley · 07/08/2014 12:04

Larissa is not to my taste but is fine. Miles better than your other two, which just look like you're trying to be 'yoonik'.

enderwoman · 07/08/2014 12:06

The Larissa I know from school runs a super successful interior design business and has a gorgeous home and lifestyle blog.

I think Elysia would have her name mistaken for the more popular name of Alicia.

BikeRunSki · 07/08/2014 12:13

Larissa is a great name, and the best of your choices.

kelda · 07/08/2014 12:21

Larissa is fine. With both Elysia and Alizabeth she would spend her whole life correcting people's spelling and pronunciation.

Larissa Rose Alizabeth is lovely.

RoseberryTopping · 07/08/2014 12:26

I wouldn't associate Larissa with a Chavvy name at all, I think it's lovely.
However if you feel it really doesn't suit her and your heart wants something different then you should absolutely change it.

Alisvolatpropiis · 07/08/2014 13:25

Larissa is lovely, I think the traditional diminutive of the name is Lara.

xXjunebugXx · 07/08/2014 15:42

I prefer Larissa, it's lovely. Lissy is a sweet nn too. I don't think the name (with or without the middle names) is chavvy.

I wouldn't let other peoples preference put you off the name but if in your heart she isn't a Larissa then maybe change it?

Sophronia · 07/08/2014 16:50

Larissa is much nicer than Elysia. I don't think it's chavvy.

Alisvolatpropiis · 07/08/2014 16:51

Elysia is nice though, origins in Greek mythology.

Thumbwitch · 07/08/2014 16:53

Nothing "chavvy" about Larissa. The only one I knew was a Russian professor who was a very clever and smart lady (I think it's quite a popular name in Russia)

Lissy is a lovely nn, so is Lissa.

CheerfulYank · 07/08/2014 16:56

I think Lissy is a sweet nickname and Larissa is nice! :) Congrats on your baby.

I think it takes awhile for any name to feel like "their name". My DD is 14 months old. Her name is Margaret, mostly called Maggie, and sometimes it's still odd to me that it's "her" iykwim.
