I quite like Anthony for a boy, however I don't like Tony. Will someone called Anthony automatically become a Tony when he is older?

I don't know any Anthony's however I do know quite a few Tony's...and I'm guessing that most of them are Anthony's (although I never asked) who have simply chosen to go by Tony instead.

I know one, now aged 13ish, who has remained an Anthony.

Also went to school with one more years ago than I care to remember! I think most do become Tony though.

CuriosityCola · 05/08/2014 17:01

I know one that has remained an Anthony. I love the name, but don't like how some people pronounce it Ant-ony. That will depend on area though.

The only Anthony I know is sometimes Ant, but never Tony.

Middleagedmotheroftwo · 05/08/2014 17:48

Curiosity - how else would you pronounce it if not Ant-ony?

beccajoh · 05/08/2014 17:51

An-th-ony.

My brother is Anthony and loads of people pronounce the 'th' even though he doesn't. He's either Ant (family) or Tony (his friends).

biscuitsandbandages · 05/08/2014 17:53

Anth-ony is how its pronounced by the little boy in my sons class

Ant-ony is how its pronounced by my 30 something cousin

Neither are ever tony. Ant is used as a short sometimes but normally the full name ia used for both.

Sophronia · 05/08/2014 18:13

I thought Ant-ony was the English pronunciation and Anth-ony was the American one.

ApplebyMennym · 05/08/2014 18:15

I've known two Anthonys called Ant, one called Anth (seems more usual Oop North) and one called Tosh..

I really like the name!

LynetteScavo · 05/08/2014 18:20

Not keen on Anthony, but love Anton.

TheFillyjonk · 05/08/2014 18:21

I've heard Irish and American people say "anTHony" but every British Anthony I know has been pronounced "AnTony".

OP, I think Tony has gone out of fashion as a nickname anyway. I'm 27 and I don't know any Tonys my age, let alone younger ones!

SwedishEdith · 05/08/2014 18:21

I think the Anthonys who become Tonys choose it themselves. I don't think that most people, if they get to know an Anthony, would start calling him Tony unless told to. So if you stick to Anthony or Ant that's what he'll be unless he chooses Tony (and I know one who changed by deed poll to Tony so he could get never be Anthony)

Willyoulistentome · 05/08/2014 18:23

I know an Anth-ony who is a Geordie.

TheFillyjonk · 05/08/2014 18:23

Oh, and I like the name Anthony too. Don't like Ant or Tony for nicknames though.

Kantha · 05/08/2014 19:12

I am English and had only ever come across it as 'Ant-ony' until I worked in an Australian high school where 'Anth-ony' was the norm.

I like Antony in either pronunciation. Like Ant as a nn, although it does make me think of Dec. Tony I don't really like. Feels like it's from the same era as Steve and Graham.

CuriosityCola · 05/08/2014 19:22

The Ant-ony sounds really harsh in Scotland. Though it's maybe because the one I know was really mischievous so him mum only ever shouted it. Smile

ButterflyOfFreedom · 05/08/2014 20:56

I know of 3 Anthony's all in their 30's / 40's and none of them get called Tony.
2 seem to be exclusively Anthony and one gets Ant or Anthony.

Fab name, underused - go for it!

BikeRunSki · 05/08/2014 21:00

I know a few, of various ages. Those over 50 are generally Tony, those under 50 are usually Ant. I prefer Ant. Although 1 is Toby.

Astarael · 05/08/2014 22:32

DH is Anthony. He was Ant in his teens/twenties but is now usually Anthony. Never been Tony.

Middleagedmotheroftwo · 05/08/2014 23:52

I have never heard it pronounced An-thony. You learn something every day. I don't like it that way though. Prefer the trad way.

VeraGrant · 06/08/2014 12:26

I know several Anthonys my age and not one of them is Tony. Some are mostly Ant and some have stuck to Anthony without any problems!
