do people get your dcs name wrong...

Just that really...
Perhaps you called Dd Emmeline and everyone calls her Emily
Or DS is Josh, just Josh and people insist on calling him Joshua.
With so many preferred variations, shortenings, alternative spellings, being used I wonder if this is a common issue.
Or do you have a misinterpreted name and if so do you wish you was called something simple and straightforward like Jane.

Yup. Ds1 has a name where the masculine version is spelt with a y and the feminine version is ie. People always get it wrong. Even if I've spelt it out first like in a text message. Really pissed me off, not sure if people are lazy or thick!

strawberrypenguin · 02/08/2014 19:27

nelly my SIL does exactly the same with my DS's name! Replaces the y with ie to make it the female version. I think she must do it on purpose for some reason as its a well known name!

FluffedUpFerretOnSteroids · 02/08/2014 19:28

When people can't say my name, it's always Beth or Bethany, I hate it and sometimes if it's an appointment I have no clue their calling me Hmm

TeenyfTroon · 02/08/2014 19:30

Yes, TheWoollybacksWife, I can hear both those versions of Kirsty so clearly in my head.
(Do love a good Scouse accent tho, reminds me of my lovely Dad!)

ROARmeow · 02/08/2014 21:36

My DD is Lydia. Told several people her name, and they've assumed it's Olivia. Not adults so much, but often kids will get it wrong.

No idea why, it could be my Belfast accent, or just the fact that there's 10 Olivia's to every 1 Lydia round here.

FreeSpirit89 · 03/08/2014 09:42

My DS is called Harley, but people call him Harvey.

ashesandfire · 03/08/2014 14:31

Yes, my dd is Bethany, she was 'Bethany nn Bethan' at her doctor's surgery for a while (and all the letters were addressed to Bethan - no idea where they got that from), a good friend also referred to her as Bethan for a while, FIL once referred to her as Beverley (REALLY?), she has also been called Bryony. I had no idea it was such a problematic name Hmm
My work colleagues also always call her Beth, which sort of irritates me - even though I LOVE the nn Beth, and it was part of the reason we chose the name- I'm conscious she will probably go by Beth when she's older so for now we are making use of her full name - and I have always introduced her as Bethany. It just irritates me slightly that people shorten names themselves!

Frikadellen · 03/08/2014 19:56

Ds is called Conrad and we often get " connor" and i LOATHE the name Connor so it REALLY annoys me.

Iph · 03/08/2014 21:58

Yes! We inadvertently named both DS1and DD1 names that it turns out a lot of idiots people misread as those of the opposite sex. DS1 is Gabriel and has also had years of birthday cards from his great-aunt addressed to Gabrielle Hmm
I still love their names though and wouldn't change them for anything.

DogCalledRudis · 04/08/2014 07:23

My own name. It is spelled Natalija in my passport, and whenever i have to show it, people will most likely read it as "Nataleejah"

BlueChampagne · 04/08/2014 16:39

Frikadellen our Conrad also gets called Connor, or Conran!

Kim82 · 04/08/2014 16:49

Yep ds is called Ben and he constantly gets referred to as Benjamin...

I've also just named my baby Charlotte and the amount of people who have asked me her name and then said "oh Scarlett? That's lovely". I didn't think the name Charlotte would cause any issues!

seb1 · 04/08/2014 18:50

I have an Eilidh though almost every english person she meets calls her Hayley.

IWannaHoldYourHand · 04/08/2014 20:23

I have an Ethan, mil called him Nathan for the first year. His teacher calls him Ian Hmm He's had Neil, and Evan too.

Ds2 is an Alexander, he is OK with pretty much every shortening, except Alex. Doctors, the dentist, the hairdresser, other parents, the nursery staff, all shorten it to Alex. He gets Alexandria/Alexandra quite a lot too.

emmeline7725 · 04/08/2014 21:01

My daughter is called Thea. When she was born we received many cards from friends of my in laws congratulating us on the birth of 'Theodora'. I was extremely unimpressed that mil had renamed her!

It often gets misheard as 'Fia' or sometimes 'Sophia'.

FruitBasedDrinkForALady · 05/08/2014 01:12

The mum of one of the boys in DD's nursery corrected him in saying her name the other day. She told him DD's name is Nina. It's not, and he was right, DD's name is Lena (lee-na, not len -a). I felt bad telling the other mum though, because DD can't pronounce her own name properly and always introduces herself as nina!

PsammeadPaintedTheLion · 05/08/2014 11:16

We have a Lucia (Loo SEE ah) who my aunt calls loo CHEE ah. It's a valid and perfectly nice pronunciation of the name, but the pronunciation that we chose is loo SEE ah. We expected to correct people who first saw the name written and used whatever prn they first though of, but not a family member who has been told a hundred times.

Dd2 gets called Jessica when her name is Francesca.

myotherusernameisbetter · 05/08/2014 11:19

outs myself now, but I have a Craig and a Ciar (pronounced Kee ir).

My neighbours call them Greg and Ikea - that's even what they write in Christmas cards....at first I thought they were trying to be funny, but it seems not! they are just a bit thick

youngest was is very pretty and was often confused for a girl who of course was called Ciara......he hates that. Interestingly despite him having an unusual name we don't get many wrong pronunciations.

GiniCooper · 05/08/2014 11:27

emmeline my mother renamed one of my nieces to people too because she was hoping my sister would change her mind.
She also didn't hide her disappointment at my failure to use her name choices. When I had my DD she did announce a different name but said she made a mistake.

Yeah, sure you did.

Artandco · 05/08/2014 11:34

Middle name so not that bad but it's Teodor. My mother tells everyone it's pronounced Theodore but we couldn't spell it right! Despite us repeating that it's spelt right in dhs country and is pronounced 'teo -door' and is dhs father and grandfathers name.

Nope she still asks why we didn't ask her for spelling clarification

Paddingtonthebear · 05/08/2014 11:37

Yes, often "Ellie" or "Erin". She is neither

monsterfaery · 05/08/2014 13:18

DD gets called Elena / Eleanor when her name is Elina(to rhyme with Tina) especially at places like the doctors so I don't realise they are calling her as it doesn't register as her name.

DS gets called Caitlin, his name is *Caelin.

Oh and other DS gets called Ashton and he is *Aston.

TheGoop · 05/08/2014 13:34

people lengthen my son's name - i.e Billy instead of Bill. He hates it, even at under four he still knows they are getting it wrong and will tell them.

AgadorSpartacus · 05/08/2014 13:55

Ds is Rohan.

This gets pronounced Ro - HAN emphasis on HAN with an audible aitch.

Also Rowan with an audible W (there is NO w in his name!)

He has been called Roland, Owen and Rory.

It's pronounced Roan with a silent h.

TheAuthoress · 05/08/2014 14:02

My DD is also called Thea (good taste emmeline Smile) and people often ask my DS 'what's your sisters name?' as she's only a baby. He can't prounounce his th's yet so says fee-a which sends most people into a tizzy of confusion! Even when I say Thea afterwards they still seem confused Grin
