I am due in two weeks and we are still struggling especially for a girls name. Dd is Mathilde and we don't know the sex of the new baby. Dh is French and I am English so needs to work in both languages.

Boys

Theodore ( theo)
Gustave (gus)
Malo
Leon

Girls

Clara
Noemie
Alice
Josephine
Margot
Cleo
Sylvie
Eliza

Any ideas? Are Margot and Mathilde too similar?

Can I just ask, how do you pronounce Mathilde?

SanityClause · 03/08/2014 11:06

I love Sylvia/Sylvie. Choose that one!

And Theodore. Teddy is a traditional nickname for Theodore, in English, but Theo is also lovely.

So, no need for further discussion, really. I've told you the names I like.

Mat-EEELd, cookielove

I have to point out that Laurence is a girl's name in French, and is very out of fashion. And I've never come across Monet or Heverline.

I have to admit that pronouncing Mathilde is a bit of a challenge for many English speakers. We live in an English-speaking country and she gets called Matilda a lot. For number 2 I want something that works the same in both languages!

Looks like all our boys names are getting the thumbs up and Clara is maybe a front-runner for a girl? I think Margot is my personal fave but it is pretty close to dd1s name. And how do you shorten Margot?

Thanks folks for your 2 cents . . . This is helpful!

out of all your boys names I like Theo/Theodore the most very classic

Gustave is brilliant! I am trying to say Clara in a French accent and it sounds like I have no tongue

Branleuse · 05/08/2014 23:30

Serge

Boy - Arthur?

usualnamechanger · 05/08/2014 23:35

Don't use Malo, it means bad in Spanish.

WildCherryBlossom · 05/08/2014 23:46

The first name that sprung to my mind when I saw your thread title was Sylvie. It just seems to go perfectly with Mathilde. But Clara is also beautiful.

Of your boys names I love Gustave best of all. 'Gus' is fantastic. Personally I would have reservations about Malo as I speak Spanish.

callipygian00 · 05/08/2014 23:54

Love Aurelie and Melodie.
From your list I prefer Cleo and Theo - theme going on there I think!

I like Theodore /Theo best for boys as it is truly a name in both places, but Gustave is also very cool!

For girls I absolutely love Josephine and Clara (though Clara can't really be shortened if that's important to you).
I don't personally like alliterative sibling names, but if you don't mind it then Margot goes well with Mathilde I think- they start with the same letter but they have completely different sounds/flows so are not similar.

goldenbaygirl · 07/08/2014 02:23

Hmm....thanks for pointing that out usualnamechanger. Its not ideal that Malo means 'bad' in Spanish, I agree. But according to DP's friends the name is becoming more and more popular in France and if French parents don't mind, I don't think it bothers me either.....

Clarinet9, I love Manon! But I feel like English speakers may struggle with it and it sounds a bit clunky in English.

What do you all think about Flora? That was the only other option I liked DP and I could agree on.

If they are born in the next 48 hours, it will be a Malo or Gustave for a boy, and Josephine or Clara for a girl. The longer I wait the more indecision!
