So weird that all the names I seem to like a short/nick name types! I posted Elvie a couple of days back! I did post Alba a while ago but hubby has gone off it :(

So, opinions on Ginny.....the Harry Potter link doesn't put me off at all.

I really like it! (Like the Harry potter link too)

squoosh · 28/07/2014 12:47

Very jolly hockey sticks.

xXjunebugXx · 28/07/2014 13:46

Squoosh, I have no idea what that means...care to enlighten me?

Oh, Enid Blyton?

Yes, rosy cheeked, 1950's boarding school heroine with boundless energy and a tendency to say 'How simply wizard!'.

TheCowThatLaughs · 28/07/2014 14:00

Virginia, with Gini for short is nice imo. Or the French Virginie is lovely too.

squoosh · 28/07/2014 14:03

Anything with 'virgin' in it would be on my To Avoid list.

xXjunebugXx · 28/07/2014 14:06

Got you Squoosh :) It has been an absolute age since I read Enid Blyton books! Gosh I feel old now!

I just like Ginny, no longer versions of names. I don't think sounds as cutesy as other shortened names. I really love Ginny and Edie. Elvie is lovely but I don't love it but the husband does. Hmmmm.

Imogen can be shortened to Ginny too. I like Ginny. It's more Antonia Forester than Enid Blyton, imo.

ButterflyOfFreedom · 28/07/2014 14:07

I know a dog called Ginny.

Don't like the name at all - for people or pets, sorry.

RiverTam · 28/07/2014 14:11

I like the character in the books, but never liked the name.

CornChips · 28/07/2014 14:11

Jennifer also can be shortened to Jinny.

(My deep and abiding love, the Jinny at Finmory books).

KEGirlOnFire · 28/07/2014 14:12

No don't do it!!! It's my boss's name and someone I know has just called their new puppy Ginny. Please don't...

Elllimam · 28/07/2014 14:13

I love it but my OH is not keen :(

SuburbanRhonda · 28/07/2014 14:14

My guinea pig is called Ginny.

I also think it sounds a bit Famous Five.

And Elvie? I bet you'd get at least one person mistakenly writing Elvis Grin

AlleyCat11 · 28/07/2014 14:16

If Barbara from The Good Life had a sister...

Viviennemary · 28/07/2014 14:18

Not keen tbh. Sounds like something out of a Jilly Cooper novel. Not that I've read any as never got past the first page.

Trainersandaches · 28/07/2014 14:19

I LOVE the name Ginny!

I read a book about the explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes who had an amazing wife called Ginny who spoke fluent Arabic, was a trained mechanic and won awards for exploring and I thought it would be a great namesake for a girl.

badtime · 28/07/2014 14:31

Mmmmmm, gin.

xXjunebugXx · 28/07/2014 14:33

I LOVE it too. I think I must be fussy! I just like Ginny, not keen on Jinny, not keen on Ginnifer (as in Goodwin) either. Imogen is lovely but a very close friend of mine has an Imogen (goes by Immy)

I don't mind if some pets have the name, hell I know so many dogs called Poppy and a fair few kids too, same with Lucy or Ruby! All nice names for humans and pets!

I appreciate your opinions :)

Apparently in HP Ginny is supposed to be short for Ginevra, which I kind of like.

CornChips · 28/07/2014 14:45

Ginny/Genevieve

But, why not have just the shorter name if that is what you like? Quite posh friends of ours just have Tom. Not Thomas. His given name is Tom.

TheCowThatLaughs · 28/07/2014 14:54

squoosh I have a friend called Virginia, who admits it wasn't an easy name to have as a teenager, but she loves her name now, and I think it's lovely too.

burgatroyd · 28/07/2014 15:14

Ginnerfer?

Gingerjv · 28/07/2014 17:49

I do not like the names which sound like nicknames or shorten names. I would choose Genevieve for Ginny
