How to pronounce Saoirse?

I've been given a class list for my new class in September, and this name is on it. I know it's Irish, and I've been told 2 variants of pronunciation.
"Sir-shur" or "See-ur-shur"?

Or something else? Obviously I want to get it right!

The first one, to rhyme with (in)ertia

littlesupersparks · 27/07/2014 12:38

Just be warned of the child who told their teacher 'no miss, it's not chev-aun, it's see-ob-han' ;-)

makingdoo · 27/07/2014 12:39

I would pronounce it Sear-sha but that might just be how we pronounce it in in my part of NI.

Jubelteen · 27/07/2014 12:40

I'd pronounce it sore sher

Lally112 · 27/07/2014 12:42

its pronounced shersha, like saoirse ronan the actress. you can you tube people saying her name if you like

fledermaus · 27/07/2014 12:42

I would pronounce it Sare-sha or Seer-sha. There are variants depending on accent though, so have a stab at it and ask the child if it's right.

fledermaus · 27/07/2014 12:43

Pronounciation here www.babynamesofireland.com/s-names

picnicbasketcase · 27/07/2014 12:44

Seer-sha, I thought. But it might be one with several different pronunciations

JanineStHubbins · 27/07/2014 12:44

Seer-sha or Sur-sha, depending on accent.

NOT Sher-sha (not how Saoirse Ronan pronounces her name either)

FrankelandFilly · 27/07/2014 12:45

I've always known it as "sir-sha" (with a soft "a" sound) at least that's how the commentators always called the racehorse of the same name Grin

LuckyLuckyMe · 27/07/2014 12:46

I would just ask her. Her pronunciation could be different from the one you pick.

lucidlady · 27/07/2014 12:46

Search-a or Sorch-a (we have both of these pronunciations in our family - v confusing at times!)

JanineStHubbins · 27/07/2014 12:48

Saoirse and Sorcha are two different names. Seoirse is different again.

BunnyLebowski · 27/07/2014 12:49

Its pronounced as Janine says.

Sorcha is a completely different name.

And it's most definitely not Sher-sha.

tak1ngchances · 27/07/2014 12:49

I would say Seer-sha (native Irish speaker)

babyblabber · 27/07/2014 12:50

seer-sha. have never heard it pronounced any other way (including saoirse ronan)

I've heard both sor-sha. or sir-sha.

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 27/07/2014 12:59

I would say "Sor-sha", is that wrong then? Ask them maybe?

Hoppinggreen · 27/07/2014 13:02

My Dd is playing it right now with her friend ser -sha!
Her mum says it more like sair-sha though and she is Irish

cate16 · 27/07/2014 13:05

I'd stop thinking about it and just ask. Who can tell these days :-) and in my experience the more you over think it- the more difficult it will become in September.

ColdCottage · 27/07/2014 13:05

When I looked at it I read it as 'sa row c" looking at it closer that might not be how I would say it but that was my first reaction to it.

scottishmummy · 27/07/2014 13:05

Seer-sha nice name

ColdCottage · 27/07/2014 13:09
