Elvie?

Opinions on this name please. I have had a hard time trying to get my husband to think of names. But last night he told me he loved this name. I am a little surprised! I really like it but wonder if it sounds like it is short for something else? I had a look at what it could be short for and I dislike all the names. Can Elvie be a name in it's own right like Evie or Edie? (I love Edie)

Naming this baby will be so much easier if a boy!

It's pretty. A woodland sprite kind of name.

I know a little Elfie but I always thinks it sounds like Alfie being said in an Australian accent. Elvie is nicer.

Lovely! IIRC it's a variant of Elvina but no need to use a loner version.

Bryonyc · 25/07/2014 11:26

I would think it was short for Elvira.

xXjunebugXx · 25/07/2014 11:30

I just couldn't call a child Elvira!

It is a variant of Elva an Irish name. I am really warming to it.

It makes me think of Elvis in some sort of Lord of the Rings scenario. Sorry.

Clearlymisunderstood · 25/07/2014 12:25

I was in school with an Elvi, really pretty name.

gymboywalton · 25/07/2014 12:43

it makes me think of elvi-the range of clothing for plus sized women

Alvy or Elva is the English spelling of the Irish name Ailbe (pronounced AL-fe):

There is another Irish name pronounced Alva (but spelled Almha) - possibly she was a goddess famous for her strength.

Alternatively, there is the Scandinavia male name Alf or Alv (meaning elf), which has female forms Alva or Elva.

All names in their own right!

I like it, it definitely beats Evie, which is pretty common now. It's very pretty :)

I love it, I have a little boy called Elvin and there were some "I just couldn't" "why would you give your child a name which is connected to elves" type comments but I love the name and he really suits the name and that is all that matters.

ACM88 · 25/07/2014 13:46

I like it!

It's a positive to me to make the link to elves and mythical creatures!!

burgatroyd · 25/07/2014 17:50

I wonder if it will grow on me...

Mmmmmm....

Its OK....

She will get called Evie a lot! How about Sylvie or Myfi or Ivy?

13loki · 25/07/2014 19:06

Love it! But I have an Älfi (pr Elfi) or Aelfi depending which government you are talking to.

sandberry · 25/07/2014 19:53

I know a few Elvie's and they are all just Elvie, not short for anything. I think it is fine as a standalone, there are plenty of Evie's who are not Evelyn, short forms as standalone names are becoming more common.

thegreylady · 25/07/2014 23:04

One of my best friends is Elva. She is quite an old lady now but I love the name.

CustardFromATin · 26/07/2014 03:41

I like Elva or Alva and Elvie is adorable as a nickname. But it feels a bit cute for plenty of grown women, and also a bit close to Elvis...

SuckingGin · 26/07/2014 12:11

Just makes me think of plus size clothes too.
