How do you pronounce it?

I thought there was only the one way. The best I can write is eyes-uk. I've not known anyone say it any differently but a recently name baby has made me wonder.

A colleague (not the mum) says eye-ZAK.

Which to me is a bit like Dorian, usually pronounced door-ee-un being pronounced dorry-an.

Not utterly wrong but not exactly right either.

I have heard both ways but I personally pronounce it the same way as you

ANM07 · 24/07/2014 22:32

I pronounce the same way as you (I'm English) but my Australian husband and his family pronounce it the latter way

Alisvolatpropiis · 24/07/2014 22:34

I could why Australians would say it the latter way.

My colleague is from Wales, as am I. If she was from a different country I would "get" the pronounciation more iyswim?

Eye-zic here.

Alisvolatpropiis · 24/07/2014 22:42

That sounds more like how I say it Polite. It's the heavy emphasis my colleague puts on "zak" which throws me

Alis, is your colleague a native English speaker?

Isaac is an old biblical name and therefore present in most languages. Each country has its own way of pronuncing it. In Spanish, for instance, it's ee-sah-ahk (with the emphasis most definitely on the AHK)

OatcakeCravings · 24/07/2014 22:47

I'd say Eye Zik or Eye Zak, I've never heard it pronounced the way you say it OP. I'm Scottish if that makes a difference.

Passthesaltdear · 24/07/2014 22:53

my ds is Isaac and we pronounce it eye-zuk. My friend pronounces it Eye-zak and it always makes me want to correct herSmile Smile

Alisvolatpropiis · 24/07/2014 22:54

She is sticky.

I've probably not written how I pronounce it well. But basically I've not heard the ACK ending before she said it.

I've always known Isaac to be a kind of "flowing" name where each syllable has equal emphasis. Like Angharad.

Knew an Isaac at school who was eyes-zuk or eyes for short.

Eye zac or eye zuc
