Honor or Honour

Choccyhobnob · 17/07/2014 11:15

I love the name Honor but can't help thinking it is the American spelling of Honour. Does the sp Honor work in the UK as it is a name rather than the thing it is named after (if you know what I mean?)

Honor is the universal spelling of the name.

Choccyhobnob · 17/07/2014 11:19

That's what I thought; the quality = Honour, the name = Honor. I needed backed up for when people try and tell me it's an American spelling! (This baby is as yet unconceived lol)

Honor is fine.

Wishfulmakeupping · 17/07/2014 11:28

Honor always

Bowlersarm · 17/07/2014 11:30

It was on our list, then we had boys

I've never seen it spelled with a 'u' before, but it's such a rare name i haven't seen it much at all. One of the reasons we liked it so much!

Personally I prefer the Honor spelling. The other looks wrong to me.

HamAndPlaques · 17/07/2014 11:33

Definitely Honor for the name. Love it.

TempsPerdu · 17/07/2014 13:29

Honor is the generally accepted spelling I think, and the only version I've ever seen used on a real person. Absolutely love it - in fact, I think it's probably my favourite girls' name at the moment! Like how it's recognisably feminine but strong and not at all cutesy or frilly.

Sophronia · 17/07/2014 13:31

Honor.

DoItTooJulia · 17/07/2014 13:33

I know a Honor. She pronounces the H.

Would Honour have a silent H?

Choccyhobnob · 17/07/2014 14:40

Hmm I thought they were both pronounced the same (silent H?).

OP posts:
Bowlersarm · 17/07/2014 15:02

Honor with the 'H' pronounced sounds bloody awful.

Like someone clearing their throat.

minipie · 17/07/2014 15:11

I know what you mean OP. I like the name but can't help seeing it as a misspelling/American spelling of Honour.

never heard of the H being pronounced, for either.

squoosh · 17/07/2014 15:32

I love Honor, one of the better virtue names.

badtime · 17/07/2014 17:01

'Honor' is a Puritan virtue name. At the time it became established as a name, spelling was still not fully standardised, but 'honor' would have been a common spelling of the word in Britain.

florascotia · 17/07/2014 18:17

Honor, as others have said. A very nice name and an admirable moral quality. I'd say 'Onn-or'.

There is also Onora and Honoria. Onora O'Neill is a seriously important present-day philosopher.

Gingerjv · 17/07/2014 19:51

I do not like name Honor (for sure Honor not Honour). florascotia mentioned Onora and Honoria these names are wonderful to my mind)

EhricLovesTheBhrothers · 17/07/2014 20:49

I know an Honour, it works once you get used to it.

mathanxiety · 18/07/2014 03:42

There is no way the H should be pronounced.

Honor is the usual spelling even in the British Isles.

Honora and Nora are Irish variations, and Annora is an older English variation.

mathanxiety · 18/07/2014 03:43

(The H is pronounced in Honora)..

AnnaD2 · 18/07/2014 22:46

I have a 1 year old Honor (definitely don't pronounce the 'h') Most people seem to know how to spell it. Just tell them it is a Latin name :) Still glad we chose it although get occasional raised eyebrows...
