Would it work for a baby born today?

Nay from me.

But I have never liked the name Tony for some reason.

Happy36 · 15/07/2014 18:54

I love it! I have an adorable student in my tutor group called Tony and that has definitely increased my liking for this name.

AuntieStella · 15/07/2014 18:58

Blair.

I think it may be some years before this name loses an association with his poisonous legacy.

Anotheronesoon · 15/07/2014 19:03

Nope

thatwhichwecallarose · 15/07/2014 19:04

Nay from me too I'm afraid. No specific reason, just don't like it.

weatherall · 15/07/2014 19:09

No

It's used car salesman name.

burgatroyd · 15/07/2014 19:48

Love it!

Florrieboo · 16/07/2014 07:13

Yes from me, my 5 year old is going to a birthday party this weekend and the boy who is about to turn 6 is called Tony, there are no other Tony's in the school, it has a very retro cool vibe! Also Tony is a lovely little boy.

burgatroyd · 16/07/2014 07:42

Would it be short for Anthony?

rachel234 · 16/07/2014 07:43

Tony is a great name imo. I'd use Anthony on Bx.

rachel234 · 16/07/2014 07:43

Meant bc (birth certificate)

Fairylea · 16/07/2014 07:44

As Anthony shortened I think it's fine. But on its own.... no. I just don't like it on its own but I don't really know why.

Mammanat222 · 16/07/2014 09:27

I'm not a massive fan, it's not horrible though and it's not exactly en vogue so you may not find another baby Tony?

Koothrapanties · 16/07/2014 09:31

Anthony works for me, but not Tony.

Tony the baby.

That's just weird.

WhereHas1999DissappearedToo · 16/07/2014 09:32

Nay, it's a bit dated.

DogCalledRudis · 16/07/2014 09:37

I know a Tony, and he's very unpleasant person.

GilbertBlytheWouldGetIt · 16/07/2014 09:45

I like it! My current favourite for a small boy is Brian. If I had a son tomorrow, he'd be Brian. Hopefully Tony would be his friend at nursery.

GertieTheGuineaPig · 16/07/2014 11:22

Do people tend to assume that most Tony's are actually Anthony's then? I'm not sure I would - I've known a couple of Tony's and they were just Tony, not Anthony. Likewise all the Anthony's I've known were always Anthony and never Tony.

Yay, but I do prefer it as a nickname for Anthony or Anton.

PrincessSofia · 16/07/2014 18:13

No,sorry it's an awful name for a baby!
Tony is very dated, why would you choose a name like that out of all the names in the world!
I also know a Tony who is an absolute bastard

Happy36 · 16/07/2014 18:30

Tony as an abbreviation of Antony or Antonio is a little nicer, to me, than just Tony.

It works well in many other languages too, i.e. he won't have to listen to it mispronounced all day if he travels to, or lives in, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian and some other speaking countries.

GertieTheGuineaPig · 16/07/2014 22:41

Actually come to think of it, even though I'm not keen on the name Tony on it's own I don't think it seems that bad if the full name is actually Anthony or Antony with Tony just as a nickname/shortened version (no idea why it seems that way though).

So if you must go with Tony then I would say name him Anthony then shorten it to Tony when he's older. I know someone else said this but a baby called Tony just doesn't seem right (again no idea why though).

I have to admit though if I did meet a baby called Tony then I would raise my eyebrow slightly but mostly because it's so dated and not something you'd expect someone to name a baby these days.

There are much better names IMO.

bouquetofpencils · 17/07/2014 00:22

I like Toni, nn for Antonia for a girl but Tony for a boy less so. It's the little baby thing. Tony as a teenager and upward is fine, but seems very grown up for a little one. I would get used to it though.

I would assume it was short for Anthony.

Not for me, go for it if you like it though! It certainly isn't 'popular' now so there won't be 5 other Tony's in his class Smile
